Jeff clued me in on this,  looks like nophead just put files on github.

This design looks really good in that it is a simplification of the parts count,  much less hardware store stuff.  The woodworking is something that can be done at CTH.

At this point in time if I were to embark on a printer build (which I might) I think that this is the machine I would build. I have been waiting for Nophead (The designer) to release the design details which, it appears, has happened pretty recently. If nothing else, I think that this design represents a very well thought out fork from the current design paradigm for repraps. Granted it does not adhere to the project goal of working towards 100% replicable parts however I think that the design does move towards making the machine more accessible to the masses.

For those interested in 3D printing in general, Nophead's blog (linked in Lee's email below) is really awesome to flip through. From my perspective he does some of the most innovative design work that does not simply follow along the standard rep-rap design paradigms. He has even developed a drastically different electronics control system for his printers that seems very intriguing however is not open sourced at this time. Definitely worth a read!

having the axis determined by the sheets is a good way to go, as long
as you can cut and drill them accurately ;)

I would think that some sort of composite material would be best,
something a bit more thermally stable than MDC or acrylic. Do you have
vacuum dust extraction at CTH? I'm thinking one of the fiberglas-based
composites might make a good sheet material .. I've got some stuff in
the garage I've been saving for a project, I'll have to dig it out and
take a look. Might even be able to be done with surplus Al plate ...
