This Autumn I am doing a sabbactical at MIT, so me and my family are spending half a year in Somerville, Boston. We enjoy orienteering and wish to go to some event when we are here, but have no car. We are trying to apply for the Zipcar-variant, and are waiting to see if we will be accepted. We can also rent a car, but that is quite expensive. We were suggested by Jason Tong in NEOC to ask if you could help with arranging drive shares to some competitions. One complicating factor, though, is that we are a family of four... This weekend, however, I am away with work. Do you think that it would be possible for my husband and our two boys to get a lift with someone from the Cambridge/Somerville area (we live at Leland St, but can take the train or buss anywhere) to the event in Great Brook farm Park? We are of course happy to share the driving cost. Thanks,AnnaFrån: Jason Tong/Evelyn Shen <jjt...@verizon.net>

Ämne: Re: The New England Orienteering Club: Best competisions this AutumnHi Anna,If you are in Somerville, you should contact someone at CSU I’ve cc’d the Bermans and Alex Jospe who might be able to make some introductions. They are Boston/Cambridge based and have many serious orienteers who will likely be traveling to most if not all the A-meets on the East Coast and could arrange a ride share. As for quality of terrain, the A-meets will give you the best maps and competition. Your really should go on Attackpoint for a discussion of the finer points - it has a global (albeit english speaking) audience, but many regular posters live in this area and also have international experience so can compare the local terrain to what you are used to back home and elsewhere in Europe.I'm afraid our local events will not be up to the same standards as the Pawtuckaway or Gunstock A meets. Middlesex Fells has been the site of A meets before, but Beaver Brook is much smaller.I would consider going to any of the other A-Meets.MidAtlantics Pennsylvania Nov 3-4Closer is a Connecticut event on Nov 9-10it is a National Ranking Event which should have a higher standard of map and course design. If you can drop in to one of CSU’s Park O events during the week and you can ask people there about these events and maps in person, if you don’t want to go on attackpoint.Best,JasonOn Sep 14, 2019, at 2:39 PM, Anna Martner <anna_m...@hotmail.se> wrote:Hi Jason,Thank you for the reply. I might check out the attackpoint-chat, thanks for the suggestion. We are mainly interested in events with nice terrain and good maps. We are a family of 4 that just moved to Somerville Boston for 5 months. We come from Gothenburg, Sweden, where we do a lot of orienteering. I looked through the calender for the additional Autumn events in the area, and the events in Middle Sex Fells and Bever Brook appear closest to where we live. Would you recommend the terrain/maps in these areas, and is there another competition in New England this Autumn with good orienteering that you would recommend? Thanks,AnnaAnna Martner

It’s hard to answer your question directly, as it depends on what you and your family are looking for, and where you live. Let me suggest you post your question on this website: http://www.attackpoint.org You will get a lively discussion about which events are “best”, and you might find someone to carpool with. I will say that the two events you mentioned are two day "A-meets”. I don’t know if you pre-registered for both days, or just walked up and did “recreational" courses. The majority of events are one day meets, and are much smaller, simpler events.. If you are only interested in two-day A meets, frankly they are all of excellent quality, and the choice really deepens on what location and date best fits your schedule. And you will probably see many of the same people at each event. Hope this helps - please feel free to ask any more specific questions. Other than that we have not decided which competitions to go to. Since we don’t have a car it is too expensive to go every weekend, so which ones would you recommend if we will pick a few more? > Thanks!
