I recently visiting Maine for the first time by driving my self made campervan to Acadia National Park and wanted to give a little ride report on the very nice Carriage Roads in the park.

After doing a few days of day hikes in the park I got my bike and drove to a parking lot near one of the Carriage Roads and did about 15 miles on various loops on very nice gravel roads where automobiles are not allowed.  To me the roads are like a very wide rail trail but so much more interesting going up, over and around various hills along the way with lots of different views from old timber to various ponds, lakes and views of the ocean.

Two days later after speaking on the phone with Tom Pinto to get some ideas I started a ride from the Jordon Pond House.  I had driven to that lot early to get a parking place and there was a light rain and it was much cooler than what it had been so after sittting on the couch in my van waiting for the rain to end I bundled up and went for a great ride in a different area of the park going around different hills and valleys and coming to so many intersections each time I had to get out the map on my phone and after using GPS to locate my destination decide what turn to take and how much longer I wanted to keep riding.

To me the roads were confusing and one example is I would get to an intersection and there would be multiple information signs and one would say Jordon Pond was in one direction and another would say Jordan Pond was in another direction referring to a loop but at the time I was wanting to ride the shortest distance to return to the pond so had to always look at the GPS map on my phone but ultimatley ended up at the house where I had started so everything was fine.

The Carriage Roads in general were very nice and would recomend them to eveyrone if you are ever in the area and also along the way are numerous stone bridges.

Thanks, Phil, for your article and for the photos.
It looked like you had a good time and a great adventure, even though it was a bit cool in Maine. Kelly

Thanks, Phil.
That is a beautiful area with lots to see and do.
Betsy and I visited Acadia in 2013 and enjoyed some cycling and wonderful hiking.
While cycling, we had navigational challenges similar to yours.
