Denver Parks & Recreation will be removing the American Elm tree tomorrow, Thursday, February 19, 2026. While we’re sad to see this long-standing tree go, its declining health has made removal necessary to keep our park safe for everyone.
After the tree is removed, the playground will reopen for families to enjoy until construction begins this spring on an improved playground. The plan is to repurpose the tree trunk into a sculpture, so its legacy will live on in the park. Check out the final playground design and project details at denvergov.org/parkprojects.
For questions about the tree and its health: fore...@denvergov.org. For questions about the playground improvement project: parksandr...@denvergov.org.
Thank you for your ongoing patience.
Montclair Park Neighbors:
We are excited to let you know that Chainsaw Mama will be starting up work to transform the beloved former Elm tree into a piece of art! You will see the artist starting next week and she is anticipated to complete the sculpture by June 5. For safety, the tree area will be fully fenced off, and the playground will be closed from May 26 through May 29. The playground will reopen for the weekend, and we anticipate it can remain open for the rest of the project. The sculpture will be similar to/inspired by the images seen below.
Construction on the new playground has been slightly delayed and is now expected to begin in early fall. The current playground will remain open until then.
