Statement on the centenary of the birth of Comrade Fidel Castro Ruz

Thursday, 13 August 2026:- The Communist Party of Swaziland (CPS) joins progressive forces, anti-imperialist movements, and working people across the world in commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Comrade Fidel Castro Ruz, the revolutionary leader of the Cuban Revolution and an enduring symbol of resistance, dignity, and internationalism.

A century after his birth, Fidel’s legacy remains alive not in statues, but in the struggles of oppressed peoples. From the mountains of the Sierra Maestra to the halls of the United Nations, he stood firmly for national sovereignty, social justice, and the right of every nation to determine its own path free from external domination.

To the CPS and the suffering Swazi people, Fidel Castro represents the principle that a small nation can defy an empire and still choose to share what little it has. Cuba’s example of free healthcare, free education, and medical internationalism has saved lives far beyond its shores. During the darkest days of apartheid and colonialism in Southern Africa, Cuba stood with the liberation movements with both solidarity and sacrifice. That tradition of proletarian internationalism continues today, and the CPS is experiencing it first-hand.

The CPS draws three lessons from Fidel’s life as we mark this centenary:

1.    Principle over pragmatism. Fidel taught us that political independence is meaningless without economic independence and social rights for workers, peasants, women, and youth. It is against this background that the CPS seeks to lead, unite and guide the people of Swaziland, the majority of whom are the working class and poor, to liberation from neocolonialism and oppression.

2.    Concrete and consistent solidarity. Cuba sent doctors and teachers when others sent sanctions. Had it not been for the selfless intervention of Cuban doctors during the Covid pandemic, far more lives would have been lost across the world.

3.    Revolution is a process. The struggle for a just society requires organisation, education, and perseverance against imperialist-driven blockades. We gain great motivation from the resilience of the Cuban people against the illegal blockade and US imperialist belligerence towards the sovereign state of socialist Cuba.

Today, as our people in Swaziland continue to fight for democracy, workers’ rights, free education, and an end to poverty, we reaffirm our commitment to the ideals that Fidel advanced and defended. We condemn the ongoing unilateral and criminal US blockade against Cuba and call for its immediate and unconditional lifting.

We also condemn the oil blockade engineered by the imperialist US government under Donald Trump. This blockade has led to electricity blackouts. The intention of these attacks on Cuba is to effect regime change and impose a government which will serve the interests of US imperialism instead of the Cuban people. We vehemently condemn the threat of an insurgency levelled against Cuba by Donald Trump. We say Hands-off Cuba!

We reiterate and pledge our respect and support to the Cuban people for their resilience and for keeping alive the example of a society that puts human beings before profit.

On the centenary of the birth of Comrade Fidel Castro, we pledge to strengthen the ties of solidarity between the people of Swaziland and Cuba, as well as the Communist Party of Swaziland and the Communist Party of Cuba, and with all forces fighting for a world of justice, peace, and socialism.

Viva Fidel!

¡Viva Cuba Socialista!

Long live international working-class solidarity!

¡Hasta la victoria siempre!

Issued by the Communist Party of Swaziland.
