Presidency on National Health Insurance Act litigation

24 Feb 2026

The litigation that has been initiated by various parties against the President and the Minister of Health has necessitated that President Cyril Ramaphosa following consultations with Minister Aaron Motsoaledi agree to delay the proclamation of any sections of the National Health Insurance (NHI) Act until the Constitutional Court has handed down its judgments in challenges due to be heard on 5-7 May 2026.

These cases relate to the public participation process that led to the adoption of the NHI Bill by Parliament.

The Department of Health has indicated that preparatory work has been ongoing such as the improvement of health services before any sections of the NHI Act are ready for commencement. The undertaking by the President will not affect the timetable for the implementation of the NHI.

The Department of Health will continue in its constitutional responsibility to strengthen the health system and improve the quality of care.

It is anticipated that this agreement will be made an order of court on 24 February 2026.

Government remains committed to the National Health Insurance and will work within the requirements of the law and judicial process to ensure that there is no undue delay.

International-Solidarity

WFTU Women's Commission and IWI (International Workers Institute) invite to participate in the online event: From history to today's struggle: working women against war and repression

Date: 6th March at 5pm Athens time

ZOOM Meeting ID: 813 9913 8943

Passcode: 270873

To relaunch 8th March as a day of internationalist struggle against war, imperialism and capitalism 8th March is not a symbolic anniversary or an institutional celebration.

It is a day of struggle born out of the labour movement and working women's struggle against capitalist exploitation, war and oppression.

Imperialist wars, the militarisation of societies and the repression of struggles particularly affect working-class women: in the workplace, in families, in war-torn territories, in forced migration. But working women are not only victims: they have always been protagonists of organised resistance, strikes, trade union and anti-imperialist struggles.

From the women workers who opposed the First World War, to the women who were the driving force behind revolutions and the anti-fascist resistance, to the women workers who today fight against war, occupation, repression and exploitation, history shows that there can be no peace without social justice, nor emancipation without class struggle.

This debate aims to reaffirm the class significance of 8 March, denounce the role of capitalism and imperialism in the production of war and repression, and strengthen the internationalist coordination of working women organised in the WFTU.

We invite all the comrades, delegates, friends to participate in the event
