COSATU Eastern Cape supports SAMWU march on 08 June 2022
Mkhawuleli Maleki, COSATU Provincial Secretary, 07 June 2022
COSATU in the Eastern Cape supports the march organized by one of its affiliated unions, South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) to be held on 08 June 2022.
SAMWU workers in the Eastern Cape will be united in action to highlight their plight in several municipalities, in the main being Amathole District Municipality (ADM.) Workers in ADM across the unions are united in defense of their hard-won rights that are violated in an unprecedented manner, workers are resolute that they cannot be passive while their rights that are undermined and trampled on.
Union bashing tactics are the order of the day in ADM. Provisions of the labour legislations are being undermined.
Unfair disciplinary actions against shop Stewards aimed at silencing the union and injecting fear in the hearts of the workers is one of the bull-dog tactics used by the employer.
18 Shop Stewards are currently suspended by the Municipal Manager. Undermining of Collective Bargaining Agreements among the challenges faced by the union under the leadership of the notorious Municipal Manger, Mr Thandekile Mnyimba.
The tenure of this Municipal Manager has been characterized by poor labour relations, adverse audit report, poor performance by the municipality. Instead of stabilizing the municipality, things worsened, and the municipality has gone bankrupt.
Under his leadership there were interventions made by the Department of Corporate Governance & Traditional Affairs as well as Treasury.
All these interventions did not yield the intended outcomes because of non-cooperation on the part of the municipality.
Surprisingly, the same Municipal Manager has been irregularly reappointed, according to our affiliate which is the eyes and the ears of COSATU and the broader Society.
We are calling upon COSATU affiliates, Alliance partners and Organs of the Civil Society to support the march in an effort to address the plight of municipal workers
Details of the march are as follows:
11h30 – Marchers assemble at North End Stadium, East London where Alliance partners will deliver messages of support.
12h30 – March commences (leaves North End Stadium to ADM Offices in Chislehurst).
14h00 – Handing over of memorandum to ADM Mayor and MEC for COGTA.

NEHAWU mourns the passing of Comrade Amos Mbedzi
Zola Saphetha, NEHAWU General Secretary, June 07, 2022
The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union [NEHAWU] is deeply saddened by the passing of Comrade Amos Mbedzi, an internationalist, freedom fighter and political prisoner. Comrade Mbedzi passed on today, Tuesday 7th June while serving an 85-year jail sentence under the Tinkundla Regime.
NEHAWU conveys its deep and heartfelt condolences to the Mbedzi family, friends and comrades in the Mass Democratic Movement (MDM) and Swaziland Solidarity Network. We wish his family strength and courage during this difficult moment.
Comrade Mbedzi dedicated his life to the struggle for the freedom of our people and championed the struggle for a democratic Swaziland against the brutal and repressive Tinkhundla Regime. The people of Swaziland have experienced repression since the 1973 decree banning all political parties, trade union movement and other progressive formations fighting for democracy.
The Tinkhundla Regime has over the years, imprisoned and tortured many political activists, who stood opposed to the regime. There are many political prisoners languishing in Swazi jails. Comrade Mbedzi was among those political prisoners. Comrade Mbedzi fell sick while serving his 85-year sentence. After long neglect by the Mswati Regime, the regime secretly transferred him to South Africa in March this year, in a futile attempt to cleanse its bloodied hands, fearing that he might die while jailed in Swaziland.
We remain deeply concerned that for a considerable period of time, the South African government could not take the country into confidence regarding the whereabouts of Comrade Mbedzi, including why he remained detained in South Africa instead of being released, especially when he desperately needed medical treatment he was denied for many years. Our government should shed more light on the circumstances of his death.
In memory of Comrade Mbedzi, the national union [NEHAWU] will continue campaigning for the dismantling of the Mswati dictatorship, for a democratic Swaziland and the release of all political prisoners and remain consistent in support of these demands by the people of Swaziland until they are realised.
NEHAWU reiterates its solidarity support to the struggle of the people of Swaziland for democracy.
END
