COSATU hails the landmark LGBTQIA+ Equality Court Judgement
Nonzuzo Dlamini, COSATU Communication Officer, 22 June 2026
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) fully supports the recent Equality Court judgement condemning hate speech towards the LGBTQIA+ community.
The case which was brought forward by the Lawyers for Human Rights and the South African Human Rights Commission against a public figure known that we believe is known for inflammatory rhetoric that has bordered on incitement and threats to public safety, is indeed a welcome exemplary reinforcement of an equal and inclusive society- a long-standing principle of the Federation.
The county’s Prevention and Combating of Hate Crimes and Hate speech Act and the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act makes it very clear that offences of hate crimes and hate speech have no room in our hard-won democracy. Speech that incites violence or advocates hatred against individuals or groups based on characteristics like race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion is against the law. This is a matter that goes to the heart of a constitutional democracy and one that we dare not compromise upon.
Too often, individuals who commit such acts downplay the severity of their conduct. Our history has proven multiple times fatal consequences of discrimination endured by members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
As COSATU has guarded, derogatory slurs in their areas of residence are at time extended to their places of work.
For that reason, the Federation adopted a strong stance against hate crimes targeting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons at its11th National Congress in 2012.
The resolution acknowledged the alarming rise in hate crimes, including rape and murder of lesbian women, and highlighted the widespread homophobia in society and workplaces, and undertook a solemn gender policy to create safe working environments that have zero tolerance for homophobia.
This court judgement not only serves as a demonstration of the authority of the rule of law, it is also a bold assertiveness of our democracy-an emancipation that is driven by the protection of human rights and human dignity for all, regardless of sexual orientation.
This year Pride Month is commemorated with a momentous court ruling that upholds justice for those whose dignity is regularly violated with brazen impunity.

ILO Convention 190: For a safe world of work where all workers are free from fear, discrimination, violence and harassment
20 June 2026
The 21 June is the anniversary of the adoption of ILO Convention No. 190 on Violence and Harassment in the World of Work and Recommendation No. 206.
These landmark international labour standards affirmed, for the first time, the right of every person to a world of work free from violence and harassment, including gender-based violence and harassment.
Violence and harassment in the world of work remain a major barrier to achieving gender equality. Women and workers facing multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination are disproportionately affected, limiting their access to decent work, career progression, equal pay, leadership opportunities and full participation in working life. Eliminating violence and harassment is therefore not only a matter of safety and dignity at work, but also a prerequisite for achieving gender equality and social justice.
Convention No. 190 recognises that violence and harassment are incompatible with safe, healthy, equitable and dignified work. It also highlights the importance of prevention and of addressing violence and harassment through occupational safety and health (OSH) measures that identify risks, protect workers and provide effective remedies. A gender-responsive approach to OSH measures is essential to building a world of work where all workers can work in safe and healthy environments, including free from fear, discrimination, violence and harassment.
Trade unions continue to play a critical role in turning the promise of Convention No. 190 into reality. Across sectors and countries, unions have campaigned for ratification, negotiated workplace policies and collective agreements, strengthened reporting and support mechanisms, and advocated for measures to prevent and address violence and harassment at work.
This anniversary comes just after the 114th International Labour Conference, where workers, employers and governments adopted a resolution concerning the ILO transformative agenda for gender equality in the world of work.
The resolution highlights violence and harassment in the world of work as a key barrier to gender equality, and calls for the ratification and effective implementation of ILO Convention No. 190. The resolution also calls for gender-responsive OSH measures, including to address gender-based violence and harassment in the world of work.
As we mark this year’s anniversary, grounded in our renewed commitment to gender equality, we call on all ILO constituents to work towards the full implementation of Convention No. 190 and Recommendation No. 206.
Preventing and eliminating violence and harassment in the world of work is fundamental to achieving safe and healthy workplaces, advancing gender equality and ensuring dignity and respect for all workers.

WFTU solidarity statement with the teachers struggle in Turkey
by WFTU HQ, 20 Jun 2026
The WFTU expresses its internationalist solidarity with the teachers’ struggle in Turkey, who for years have been resisting, with multiple forms of struggle, the privatization policies that have systematically undermined teachers’ job security, working
conditions, and fundamental labor rights.
Despite the numerous official meetings with the Ministry of National Education, the Parliamentary Education Commission, and the Ministry of Labor, as well as the government’s promises, no meaningful progress has been achieved.
Moreover, we condemn the systematic violation of democratic trade union rights and freedoms.
We demand an immediate end to all detentions, restrictions, and all other measures aimed at preventing teachers from exercising their trade union rights. In addition, we urge the withdrawal of the exclusion of more than 1,600 teachers from public appointments.
The WFTU joins its voice with the struggling teachers and the Teachers’ Union, who are fighting for dignified employment, fair working conditions, and the full recognition of union rights for all education workers. The international class-oriented trade union
movement stands in solidarity with their struggle and their just demands.
