Media Alert: POPCRU Restore Dignity March

Richard Mamabolo, POPCRU National Spokesperson, 19 June 2025

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) will be embarking on a Restore Dignity March as part of its ongoing campaign to defend workers' rights, uphold human dignity within the criminal justice cluster, and demand decisive action against systemic injustices affecting members in the South African Police Service and Correctional Services.

This comes in light of the many misconducts and allegations of sexual exploitations at SAPS training facilities and in workplaces in general.

We strongly condemn any and all forms of sexual harassment in the workplace. As an organisation representing workers within the criminal justice cluster, we further affirm our unwavering commitment to protecting the rights, safety, and dignity of our members.

Sexual harassment is a serious violation of human rights and a gross abuse of power. It undermines the work environment, affects morale, and hinders the effective functioning of our institutions.

POPCRU views such behaviour as intolerable and unacceptable, regardless of rank or position.

Details of the March:

•      *Date: Tuesday, 24 June 2025*

•      *Time: 08h00*

•      *Meeting Point: Burgers Park, Pretoria*

•      *Route: March to the Shorburg Building, 429 Helen Joseph Street, Pretoria*

•      *Purpose: Handing over of a Memorandum of Demands to the National Police Commissioner*

•      *Keynote Speaker: POPCRU President, Cde Thulani Ngwenya*

This mobilisation forms a critical part of the broader Restore Dignity Campaign, a drive aimed at confronting injustice, promoting ethical leadership, and ensuring fair labour practices across the security cluster.

POPCRU calls on all members and affected communities to stand together in solidarity and action as we demand accountability, transformation, and respect for the dignity of our officers and correctional workers.

Media is hereby invited.

Statement by the ANC Study Group on Higher Education and Training on the disclosure of panel members for the selection and recommendation of SETA Board Chairpersons

 21 June 2025

The ANC Study Group on Higher Education and Training welcomes the recent developments in the process of appointing SETA Board Chairpersons, and notes the following:

  • Minister Nkabane’s undertaking to apply corrective measures to address procedural concerns raised in the Portfolio Committee, reflecting the Minister’s commitment to strengthening the integrity of the SETA Board appointment process and building public trust.
  • The reopening of nominations, following the earlier withdrawal of appointments. We perceive this as a testament to Minister Nkabane's responsiveness to public concerns and trust that the new appointments will be made in a timely, transparent and inclusive manner that represents our country’s imperatives, including the representation of women, youth, and persons with disabilities.
  • The public apology issued by the Minister to the public and Portfolio Committee. We welcome this as a demonstration of the Minister's political maturity, leadership, and commitment to cultivating a constructive relationship between the Executive and Parliament.
  • The disclosure of the names of the panel members appointed to oversee the selection and recommendation process for SETA Board Chairpersons.

Moreover, the study group appreciates the critical role of Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) in building our country’s skills base, addressing youth unemployment, and advancing socioeconomic transformation. Therefore, appointments to SETAs must not only reflect merit and skills but must be supported by a process grounded in credibility and transparency.

In this regard, the ANC Study Group has been actively engaged in the Portfolio Committee’s oversight, demonstrating the ANC’s commitment to accountability and good governance.

Unwavering support for Italian metalworkers in their struggle for a fair deal

20 June, 2025

Almost a year after the expiration of Italy’s collective agreement for 1.5 million metalworkers, a solution remains elusive. The three collaborating unions, FIOM, FIM and UILM, had no choice but to initiate another day of strike action.

On 20 June 2025, FIOM, FIM and UILM staged an 8-hour strike combined with regional demonstrations across Italy. This action was essential to apply pressure on their counterparts. The two main employers’ associations, Federmeccanica and Assistal, continue to maintain their irresponsible attitude in refusing to reopen the negotiations for the national metal agreement.

The strike also extended to small and medium-sized enterprises. The unions relaunched their mobilization and reinforced a blockade of overtime and flexibility.

Workers marched nationwide, delivering a clear message that they will not accept stagnation or concessions that undermine their living standards. Their demands include measures to address wage stagnation, job insecurity and insufficient workplace protections.

From the outset, the three metal unions have acted commendably, engaging their members to ensure a democratic process in adopting their demands. They have developed a platform that accurately represents the interests of their members at the shop floor level.

FIOM, FIM and UILM are leading the strike in response to employers’ refusal to engage in meaningful dialogue. The employers’ failure to offer a fair agreement jeopardises workers’ wages and rights, leading to widespread dissatisfaction.

Renewal of the national agreement is the answer to providing stability and restoring industrial relations in this critical sector for Italy’s employment, GDP and trade balance. A revised agreement must ensure that working families, who have lost purchasing power during the cost-of-living crisis in recent years, receive their fair share of profits and productivity so that they can make ends meet. The metalworkers are united in the fight to resume bargaining.

industriAll Europe general secretary, Judith Kirton-Darling, reiterates industriAll Europe’s steadfast solidarity with its affiliates in the Italian metal sector as they fight for dignity and justice.

“industriAll Europe stands firmly behind the workers' demands for clear and tangible increases in collectively agreed pay rates, ensuring they exceed inflation to improve purchasing power. Furthermore, we support their efforts to improve job quality through better work-life balance and training rights.”

IndustriALL Global Union general secretary, Atle Høie, urges the employers to return to the negotiating table and participate in good-faith bargaining.

“The revision of this massive agreement is long overdue. It is in the interest of both companies and workers to resolve the impasse and eliminate the current uncertainty.”

The WFTU condemns Israel’s attack on Iran

13 Jun 2025 by central wftu

The World Federation of Trade Unions strongly condemns Israel’s attack on Iran. This attack is yet another blatant violation of the principles of international law, and it increases the dangers to peace and security in the region and across the globe.

It marks yet another step in the escalation of aggression by the murderous state. It is clear that this arrogance and aggression are fueled by the support of the United States and its allies.

The WFTU calls on its affiliates and friends to intensify mobilizations and solidarity actions with the struggling Palestinian people and the peoples of the region, who are victims of Israeli aggression
