Deputy Minister Joe Phaahla on NHLS efforts to restore operations after cyber-attack
21 Aug 2024
The Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Joe Phaahla would like to announce that the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) operations have been fully restored following a cyber-attack in June this year which significantly disrupted the normal delivery of essential health services in the public health sector.
This follows a briefing by the Board and Executive Management to the Deputy Minister, who oversees the work of public health entities under the Department of Health, on the progress made to restore the systems following this unfortunate incident, together with plans to prevent and manage future unforeseen disruptions.
The
NHLS is the backbone of the country’s public health and manages a network laboratory system that serves over 85% of South Africa’s population through 230 laboratories, playing a critical role in clinical outcomes and patient diagnosis.
Deputy Minister Phaahla thanks the NHLS on its swift and tireless efforts to restore its laboratories to full operating capacity following a successful and comprehensive rebuilding of its information technology systems and infrastructure because more than 70%
of healthcare decisions are dependent on their services, thus restoring operations underscores its commitment to country’s public healthcare.
Following the recent hacking incident, Dr Phaahla urged the entity to taking decisive steps to fortify its information systems against future threats and welcomes their commitment to investing in advanced cybersecurity technologies and implementing new protocols designed to enhance both the security and resilience of the NHLS digital infrastructure.
These improvements reflect its dedication to maintaining the highest standards of service delivery. It is strengthening its systems to ensure that any future challenge is met with minimal disruption to its essential operations, allowing it to continue providing critical health services to the country with confidence and integrity.
The
Department will continue to support the NHLS and other public health entities to ensure they execute their mandates to effectively contribute to the public health system.

SADTU’S condolence message on the demise of Professor Muxe Nkondo
Mugwena Maluleke, SADTU General Secretary, 21 August 2024
The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) sends its sincerest condolences to the family of renowned academic and public policy guru, Professor Muxe Nkondo.
SADTU has a special relationship with the Nkondo family through the late Comrade Curtis Nkondo who was brother to Professor Nkondo. Curtis Nkondo was the first vice president of SADTU at its launch in 1990 and had played a critical role towards its formation as president of the Union’s precursor, the National Education Union of South Africa (NEUSA).
Professor Nkondo was an embodiment of a teacher we envision as a Union. Just like his brother, he understood the value of education beyond pedagogy but as a tool which one could use to beat the apartheid system. He had a passion not only for education but also for arts, environment and helping communities.
Professor Nkondo was a champion for cultural revolution, a fervent advocate for the development, promotion, and protection of African indigenous knowledge systems. He believed deeply in their integration into the fields of mathematics and science.
His relentless pursuit of academic excellence and commitment to education inspired countless individuals to follow careers in academia and beyond.
He lectured at universities in the United States of America and South Africa. He was former vice chancellor and deputy vice chancellor at the University of Limpopo, former chancellor at the University of Venda, curriculum development and governance adviser at the University of South Africa, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Tshwane University of Technology, Central University of Technology and Walter Sisulu University.
He made significant contributions in the development of national policies for various government departments and chaired several expert panels and reference groups.
His legacy is one of empowerment, enlightenment, and the elevation of African knowledge and its role in shaping the future.
May his soul rest in peace.

Eurof-wftu: Solidarity and closeness to the Greek workers and people
18 Aug 2024 by Central WFTU
On behalf of the Eurof WFTU I send you the sympathy of the class organisations affiliated to the FSM in Europe for the great tragedy that has struck your country, where fires are
destroying the environment, homes, jobs and sowing death and destruction.
There is no death in these events, but they are the result of the exploitation of the land, of the policy of robbery and disregard for what the hand of man produces for nature, when the only objective is the robbery of resources, also through the exploitation
of the environment.
We are close to the Greek people and workers, to the volunteers who are working to save what can be saved, and to those who, like PAME, will be able to denounce their responsibilities on this occasion as well.
PIERPAOLO LEONARDI
Head of WFTU European Office
