COSATU to host lectures in the lead up to 40th anniversary

Zanele Sabela, COSATU National Spokesperson, 25 September 2025

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is set the host a series of lectures in the lead up to its 40th anniversary celebration at Dobsonville Stadium on 6 December.

The culmination of four years of unity talks, COSATU came into being on 1 December 1985, and brought together 33 competing unions and federations opposed to apartheid and whose common goal was to bring about a non-racial, non-sexist and democratic society.

The Federation has been at the forefront of advancing, defending and protecting the interests and rights of workers since, and has led in the formation of the country’s progressive labour laws including workers’ rights to form trade unions, collective bargaining and to strike, minimum conditions of service, National Minimum Wage, etc.

From its vehement resistance of apartheid to the ushering in of the democratic dispensation and improving the economic and social wellbeing of the working class 31 years post democracy, COSATU has stood the test of time.

In the lead up to its 40th anniversary in December, the Federation will host a variety of activities starting with a series of lectures by its National Office Bearers.

The lectures will tackle diverse subjects from COSATU’s pivotal role in gender struggles to the strike that broke the back of industry-wide exploitative labour practices as far back as 1959.

SACP statement on World Teachers’ Day 2025

Mbulelo Mandlana, SACP Head of Media, Communications and Information, 5 October 2025- The South African Communist Party (SACP) joins the working class in commemorating World Teachers’ Day, expresses gratitude to all teachers in South Africa and the world for their sterling contribution to education and human development.

The SACP reaffirms its solidarity with both organised and unorganised working class in the education sector as they fight against the challenges they face. The Party further supports workers’ efforts in dealing with the challenges of overcrowded classrooms, heavy workloads, and lack of mental health support, among others.

We thus call for unity of teachers in our country in order to wage the struggle for better working conditions. This necessitates working round the clock to stop violence in schools as it places both learners and educators, thus impacting the learning environment. The SACP calls for improved funding as well as active involvement of parents and the communities as crucial stakeholders in imparting knowledge to learners.

In taking forward the struggle for social emancipation, the SACP will continue to deepen its solidarity with all workers in the education sector, as well as the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in its effort to organise and unite workers across all sectors.

Workers of the World, Unite!

ISSUED BY THE SOUTH AFRICAN COMMUNIST PARTY,

FOUNDED IN 1921 AS THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF SOUTH AFRICA.

Right to strike: Court begins hearings

6 October 2025

From 6 to 8 October, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) begins public hearings on the request for an advisory opinion on the right to strike.

In 2023, the Governing Body of the ILO referred the matter to the ICJ under ILO Convention No. 87 – Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organise.

Twenty states and five international organisations have expressed their intention to participate in the oral proceedings before the Court. The schedule for the hearings, adopted by the Court, can be viewed here.

The ITUC will address the Court on the first day of the hearings, from 10:15 to 11:15 CEST.

The proceedings will be streamed live and on demand in the two official languages of the Court - English and French - here on the Court’s website and on UN Web TV.

“For democracy and social justice, the right to strike is fundamental, and this must be recognised once and for all in international law.”ITUC General Secretary Luc Triangle

“We look forward to putting our case to the ICJ, demonstrating that this right is essential for workers to secure a fair deal, and that they must be able to take strike action without fear or repression.”
