NUM Youth Structure and the ANC Youth League to jointly picket outside the Minerals Council South Africa against retrenchments

Sandra Maseko: NUM Youth Structure Acting National Secretary, 22 January 2025

The NUM Youth Structure and the ANC Youth League are scheduled to stage a picket outside the Minerals Council South Africa offices in Rosebank in firm opposition to the ongoing retrenchment of mineworkers and high youth unemployment in South Africa.

The picket is planned to take place as follows:

Date: Friday, 24th January 2025

Time: 11h00

Venue: Outside the Minerals Council South Africa in Rosebank

The NUM Youth Structure demands companies to exhaust all options before deciding on retrenching workers.

Thousands of mineworkers are today sitting without jobs. One mineworker is able to provide and support more than 10 family members. The NUM Youth Structure calls on all other progressive youth organisations including workers, unions, civil society, and community organisations to join this progressive struggle for worker’s rights.

Eastern Cape committed to addressing challenges of unemployed medical doctors in public healthcare

22 Jan 2025

The Eastern Cape Provincial Government, led by Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, has committed to addressing the pressing issue of unemployed doctors in the province. Yesterday, Premier Mabuyane together with Director General, Mbulelo Sogoni, as well as Acting MEC for Health Sibulele Ngongo, met with leadership of Cosatu in the province and representatives of unemployed doctors to discuss their demands for permanent employment.

The meeting was a crucial step in the Provincial Government's efforts to address these demands. In addressing the issue, the Premier has directed the Eastern Cape Department of Health  supported  by  the  Office  of  the  Premier  and  Provincial Treasury to determine posts that may be filled informed by the need and available budget.

“Doctors will be employed, and we are hard at work in resolving this problem. In the interests of ensuring transparency on these matters, my office will continue updating relevant stakeholders on this issue,” Premier Mabuyane said.

The Premier emphasised that the Provincial Government recognises the critical role medical professionals play in ensuring the health and well-being of citizens.
While acknowledging the need for more doctors across the province, Premier Mabuyane emphasised that the Department of Health faces budgetary constraints, partly due to unbudgeted medico-legal claims.

The Provincial Government is exploring short-to-long-term initiatives aimed at addressing the issue of unemployment among medical professionals, as well as partnerships with private sector healthcare providers.

"We are committed to working together with all stakeholders to address the health challenges facing our province. By working together, we can ensure that our citizens have access to quality healthcare services and that our province has the skilled healthcare workers it needs to thrive,” Mabuyane added.

Premier Mabuyane has determined that all these processes should lead to the employment of medical professionals using available resources, effective from 01 April 2025.

SACP reiterates its support for the historic people’s decision for French troop withdrawal: A milestone in the Second Phase of the African Revolution

Dr Alex Mohubetswane Mashilo, SACP Central Committee Member, National Spokesperson & Political Bureau Secretary for Policy and Research Wednesday, 22 January 2025

Ivory Coast is the latest West African nation to expel troops of former colonial power after Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger. The South African Communist Party (SACP) unequivocally supports the bold and historic decisions taken by the governments and peoples of Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Ivory Coast to demand the withdrawal of French military forces from their countries. This decisive step reflects a growing rejection of imperialist domination and neocolonial subjugation in Africa, marking a pivotal moment towards advancing, deepening and completing the Second Phase of the African Revolution.

This collective assertion of sovereignty is a direct challenge to centuries of exploitation, plunder and control that have undermined the self-determination and democratic sovereignty of African nations. The presence of foreign troops, under the guise of maintaining security, has too often served as a tool for perpetuating unequal power relations and securing the economic interests of the imperialist forces. By asserting their right to control their lands, resources and futures, the governments and peoples of Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Ivory Coast are advancing the unfinished struggle to rid the continent of all forms of imperialist and neocolonial domination and exploitation.

The SACP views this moment as a critical step towards achieving complete independence and democratic sovereignty across the continent. The African Revolution, initiated through the national liberation struggles that dismantled colonial rule, remains incomplete until all African nations can exercise full political and economic sovereignty, free from external interference.

We further emphasise the urgent need to transform the existing global economic order, which perpetuates unequal economic relations and uneven development between African countries and the nations of the Global North. The domination of Africa’s resources by Global North multinational corporations, the imposition of exploitative trade policies and the extraction of wealth for the benefit of external powers must come to an end. Instead, a just and equitable global economic system must be built – one that centres African development, prioritises the well-being of African peoples and dismantles structures of dependency and exploitation.

The SACP stands in solidarity with the peoples and governments of West Africa and the Sahel in their courageous pursuit of democratic national sovereignty. We call upon all progressive forces across the continent and the world to support these nations in their quest to build independent, self-reliant and democratic and egalitarian nations.

As we reaffirm our commitment to anti-imperialism and the struggle for genuine African unity, we reiterate that the Second Phase of the African Revolution demands not only the removal of foreign military forces but also the establishment of systems and relations that reflect the will of the people. This includes strengthening regional co-operation, promoting economic self-determination and ensuring that the voices of the working class and oppressed masses are at the forefront of shaping the continent’s future.

Let this moment inspire us all to intensify our collective efforts towards true freedom and complete social emancipation. The struggle for the complete liberation of Africa and emancipation of the working class from exploitation continues.

Forward to a truly sovereign and democratic Africa!

Forward to the complete transformation of global economic relations!

SACP unequivocally condemns Donald Trump’s irrational reinstatement of Cuba on the United States’ fraudulent “state sponsors of terrorism” list

Dr Alex Mohubetswane Mashilo, SACP Central Committee Member, National Spokesperson & Political Bureau Secretary for Policy and Research Wednesday, 22 January 2025

The South African Communist Party (SACP) condemns with the utmost contempt it deserves the newly inaugurated US president Donald Trump’s reinstatement of Cuba into its list of so-called “state sponsors of terrorism”. The reinstatement of Cuba into this fraudulent list reinforces the close to seven-decade-long blockade imposed by the United States government on the Cuban people, a stance that has been repeatedly condemned by the United Nations as a violation of international law and calling upon the US government to remove the blockade.

The irrational executive order signed by Trump moments after his inauguration underscores the unilateral arrogance of the United States’ imperialist regime. The list, compiled without international recognition or any credible evidence, exemplifies this overreach. When it comes to evidence, Trump’s executive order blatantly exposes the baseless inclusion of Cuba, standing in stark contradiction to the truth.

Equally indefensible, Joe Biden’s administration strengthened imperialist aggression against Cuba on various fronts, including perpetuating the same irrational stance, contradicting his campaign commitment. Biden only removed Cuba from the list mere days before his term ended. The government and people of Cuba have stood firm against the United States-led imperialist aggression for over a century. We, the SACP, reaffirm our unwavering solidarity with the people and government of Cuba: the struggle against the US-led imperialist aggression continues.

Contrary to the imperialist United States regime’s narrative, it is a historical fact that it is the United States government itself that has carried out or sponsored acts of terrorism against the people of Cuba, in violation of international law with impunity. Cuba has been a victim of various acts of terrorism, which were overtly or covertly supported by the United States, on the one hand, all while Cuba, on the other, has been one of the leading nations in the genuine fight against terrorism.

Through its economic warfare against the Cuban people, the United States has caused hardships for the Cuban nation, particularly economically, including by blocking access to crucial supplies.

The SACP salutes the brave people and government of Cuba who, with the active support of the overwhelming majority of the people across the globe, continue to be resilient and have stabilised their country’s people-based system. Cuba’s fight is a fight for all of humanity against imperialist domination, exploitation and foreign occupation.

The SACP will continue to support the total lifting of the illegal blockade and calls for the United States to end its occupation of Cuba’s Guantanamo Bay with immediate effect and unconditionally.
