With two riders dropping out I'm leaning more toward not pooling the donations...

Hi Anja,
Sorry not to write sooner, it has been a crazy summer. My job has kept me on the road and travelling for 7 weekends (and most of the intervening weeks), so it really torpedoed my training efforts. I was able to find a bike rental over the weekend before I flew back from San Francisco, and unfortunately it confirmed that all this time away from the bike makes the Aids Ride more than I can handle at this point while keeping my tendonitis in check.

It sounds like the group is leaning towards individually raising money rather than doing it as a group, so I hope this will not affect anyone else. Since Alex has ridden around the lake several times this year, he was really doing this to support my efforts, he would also like to bow out since his work is heating up. Thank you so much for organizing this, and I am so sorry Alex and I won't be able to ride, but I hope you have a great time with the group!

Best,
Megan

Hi Guys,

I know this part is less fun than training and actually riding, but we do need to raise $$ to fund our ride.
We each need to come up with $280 (which is less than it would be if we were doing this individually rather than as a team).

So far I've got $143 and Siddharth has $150.  You can see how we're doing as a team, here: http://tinyurl.com/COC-century

Last year the $$ seemed to come in a lot faster; perhaps because it was the first time I'd asked for money, and because people were excited that I'd lost all the weight.  This year it's going slower.

The official web page has some fund raising tips, here:
http://aidsrideforlife.org/downloads/STAP%20ARFL%20Fund%20Raising%20tips.pdf

Below is a copy of the email I sent a few months to my friends, neighbors, and relatives, asking if they'd like to help sponsor my ride.  Feel free to use anything in there that is helpful.

Hi Everyone,

One of the things I wanted to do after losing 180 lbs was ride a century again. You can read more about my journey back to health and an active lifestyle, here: www.sparkpeople.com/mypage.asp

The event I selected is the AIDS Ride for Life, and I did it September 2010.  It circumnavigated Cayuga Lake and took me 6:53 of actual biking (about 14.7 mph on average), and 8:38 including breaks off the bike. My friends and relatives (including many of you at LSL) generously donated $360 to sponsor my ride!  Here is a story about that ride, with pictures:
www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp

Over the past year I've managed to KEEP the weight off (in many ways harder than getting it off in the first place) and I'm going to ride in this event again.  It'll be held on September 10, 2011 (9/10/11).
This year I'll be riding with friends from the Cornell Outing Club, who are fellow avid outdoors people.  Our team page is here:

The money we raise will benefit the Southern Tier AIDS Program which provides comprehensive HIV/AIDS services in the Southern Tier of New York. Founded in 1984 as a local response to the HIV epidemic, Southern Tier AIDS program provides effective and innovative HIV and Hepatitis C (HCV) prevention education and outreach services to people living with HIV/AIDS. Having grown up in the SF Bay Area in the 1980s I suppose I'm particularly sensitive to issues surrounding this disease.

If you are inclined to sponsor me, I'm grateful. If not, no worries.
It's all good. Heck, I'm just happy to be in the shape I'm in, to be ABLE to ride in something like this!

Many thanks for your support -- and please forward this to anyone who you think might want to interested!
