Born from the desire to build a stronger community in the wake of the
beating death of an Old Bridge man in June, township police are
launching a Citizens' Police Academy that will educate residents on
police practices and give them basic training in hopes of
strengthening neighborhood watch.
Old Bridge Police will start the 13-week course next month,
instructing residents on police procedures, training and criminal law
-- akin to what cadets learn while training to become officers.
“Basically, it’s a compacted police academy,” said Old Bridge Police
Lt. Robert Greenway. “The residents who enroll are going to learn
everything that police officers learn in the police academy. For a
person that doesn’t know anything about police, it can be pretty eye
opening.”
The Citizen’s Police Academy is one of the first steps of a multi-
prong approach to building relationships between residents and police
in the wake of the brutal beating death of Indian American computer
scientist Divyendu Sinha in June.
The Citizen’ Police Academy will consist of 3-hour courses on Tuesday
nights at a location to be announced. There will be no fee.
The Citizen’s Police Academy is being developed by Old Bridge Police
in conjunction with the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and
Citizens of Old Bridge, a community activism group formed in the wake
of Sinha’s death.
“This will be a positive step in terms of a collaborative level of
government and policing where the citizens can be involved and build
better relationships with one another,” said Suresh Kumar, who heads
Citizens of Old Bridge.
Greenway said police hope the program will also be a boon to the
neighborhood watch program, which currently has 45 members.
“The whole concept of neighborhood watch is that they’re the eyes and
ears of our police department,” he said. “I think it can be eye
opening for them too. By enrolling they’ll have more knowledge and I
think they’ll be better equipped to know what to look for.”
