Use and best practice of SM in a professional setting can lead us down
a couple of paths. 1. Using SM for your own growth and development or
2. Use for your organizations workforce development.
Today let me share something that is for the latter of the two.
Many folks within our CNY-ASTD chapter are face-to-face instructors.
And of course their success is tied greatly to the success of the
trainees. Therefore any technique that will enhance trainee
understanding and ultimately improve their performance should be
employed.
Twitter as a tool is really simple.... No, I mean it. Sure, its
foreign to many and often misunderstood but the bottom line is this:
One is given 140 characters to share thoughts to a large audience (if
your account is "unprotected") or a smaller audience (if your account
is "protected"). Nothing scary about sharing, just remember its an
extension of yourself, in real time.
So, how can you use this simple tool to improve face-to-face
training? By giving your trainees an opportunity to express
themselves before, during, and after a training session.
Jane Hart is a favorite blogger/researcher of mine as her writings
alone have really opened my eyes to the practical uses of SM
technologies. In this post (
http://c4lpt.co.uk/140Learning/
lecture.html) she shares some tips on how to use SM in a classroom/
workshop:
Pre-class activities might include:
- The professor/lecturer/teacher/trainer introducing the lesson on
Twitter, i.e. explaining what's going to be discussed/covered in the
class
- The students/learners submitting questions on twitter for
discussion in advance before class
During the class
In-class activities might include:
- Display the pre-class tweets/discussion that has been taken place
and that should take place
- Displaying the in-class tweets to keep the discussion going
Post-class and between classes activities might include:
- Use Twitter to post notes after the class, for those who missed the
class
- Continuing the discussion using twitter, especially if out of time
during class, as well as keeping the students/learners communicating
with one another.
- Dealing with students' individual questions
- Use Twitter to share links to relevant resources and websites that
pertain to the lesson.
- Have students share their experiences on twitter of what they have
done and are doing
- Use twitter to send out reminders about upcoming tests, project due
dates, or any course/class-related news
Be sure to see the whole post for links, a video on how a professor is
Texas is engaging students with the use of Twitter, and other ideas.
