If you were asked, what were you doing one year ago (September 30, 2009), would you be able to answer? I can, but only because I've been thinking about where we've come as a group and a year ago tonight was our first SILSIG meeting at the Cobblestone in Liverpool.
Do you remember when we met....
there were concerns about privacy
there were concerns about having to check one more thing (home email, work email, LinkedIn, now twitter?)
there were concerns about WIIFM
there were concerns about too much information coming at you at once (remember the firehose analogy?)
there were concerns about understanding the language (what's a hashtag?)
there were concerns about whether or not this could be relevant to increasing productivity in the workplace (ASTD requisite)
Let me tell you where we are. It was a slow process getting our SILSIG off the ground, and sometimes just as we thought we were sailing on the cloud (cloud, what cloud?) we'd land with a thump BUT that doesn't mean we are going to throw our hands up and fuhgetaboutit...nope not us! We actually had a fairly active year with several meetings and events, as well as continuous dialogue on our googlegroup http://groups.google.com/group/cnyastd_silsig?h1=en (if you are not a member please join our group).
After our meeting at the Cobblestone (one year ago today), New Horizon's hosted a meeting on November 3 en-titled "Twitter - get to know me" and on November 16 our book club met to discuss Jay Cross' book "Work Smarter: Informal Learning in the Cloud". We began the new year off with a bang with Learn Chat on January 21 at Aspen Dental and just a few weeks later was our Program: Blending Web Technologies with Tradition Learning where we brought in Tom Stone from elementK. On the morning of March 31 group members met at Panera Bread and discussed Social and Informal Learning what does it mean to you? We ended our year with a meeting in late May titled "The Use of and Best Practices of SM in a Professional Setting".
So how do we plan to kick-start the 2011 year? Here's how. Mark is going to pass the co-chair baton to Robin Bridson of New Horizons as his term as CNYASTD president ramps up. Robin and I are going to co-chair and it was just about a year ago that Robin sent her first tweet at the November 3rd meeting and today Robin's tweets are frequently RT (re-tweeted). We have some exciting ideas that we want to share with you and we KNOW you have some things to share with us.
Our ideas include things like SM, Pull vs Push Learning. We look forward to designing a Pecha Kucha http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pecha_Kucha. Over the summer Tony Bingham co-authored a book with Marcia Conner (a member of our googlegroup) titled The New Social Learning: A Guide to Transforming Organizations Through Social Media (see link for book reviews http://www.bkconnection.com/ProdDetails.asp?ID=9781605097022#reviews). This is a book we hope to incorporate into our SILSIG book group this year.
Did you know the Tom Stone program was one of the biggest for CNYASTD last year? It's evident there's an interest, desire and drive to know more and we NEED you to help us fill that void by sharing your wish lists with us, bringing a friend to our meeting, and helping us to launch this SILSIG as it takes on a life of its own.
We want to find out from you where you are in your social media journey and what you'd like to know about.
So, let me ask...
Where are you today?
Will you be on twitter tonight? #lrnchat?
Are you LinkedIn?
Do you Facebook?
Which if any do you use for business?
How do you use it/them for business?
What, if you do employ it, do you gain by using Twitter?
Do you hear more about social networking today than one year ago?
What do you want to learn?
Please return this message to cr...@twcny.rr.com with answers to the above questions so we may plan our first meeting.
