Good morning!

I wish I was able to join many of you at the Supported Life Conference.  I hope to be back next year.

Yesterday, I went to visit an old friend.  Someone I have known for well over twenty years.  She happens to have a disability and uses supported living services.

When I arrived, she asked me if I would please look at a piece of paper and sign it.  I did so, but with a great deal of disappointment.  It was basically a waiver of liability and promise to obtain emergency medical services if needed.  On the back was what was titled a Natural Supports Log where I was to provide dates and times of our visit.  Apparently, we are no friends in someone's mind.

I know I've been out of the loop for a long time, but I had no idea that this was where we've gone as a service system.  I think it's sad when supported living starts looking more like licensed residential services.

I agree Bill, the Regional Center System cannot get the point that people just want to live their lives with dignity and to not have everyone they know become an offical part of their "Circle of Support".  I know that I do not have to have everyone who comes to see me sign in like I am a doctors office.  But the system just keeps pushing Supported Living into looking like a one person residential facility..... it needs to stop.... but they have the power and money and at least up here in Redding DEMAND that we do these things or they will with hold monies from the provider .....   Supported Living is moving in a direction that we never wanted it to go in.... we need to do something as both providers and have the people who we provide service for stand up for their rights and tell the system ... I am NOT going to do this I am not living in a facility

It might be about liability and risk?

and what about Dignity of risk.?  and if everything we do is attached to liability, then we are going in the wrong direction...... there is no liability or risk when I have friends in my OWN home.... and it is the persons HOME not a facility , but the Regional Center System wants control over every aspect of the people whom we work with lives, and that is just not right

I really wasn't blaming anyone.  I'm just disappointed and hope that issues like this can be discussed and solutions found that work for everyone.  Maybe that's just not possible any more.

I know you were not blaming anyone but it just a point of frustration for me as I have been doing supported living for over 6 years and it appears to me that every year the regional center system grasps more and more of each persons rights, and wants us as providers of supported living to model our programs more like residential care systems, and that is not the model that we all are working for, for our clients, we want them to have the same rights, expectations, and living situations as we do ... or at least that is what I strive for ....... they system just seems like it is winning and the clients losing more an more of their choice in their every day living situations, and again I say I do not sign in to visit at my friends homes nor do they sign in at mine....
