Biking to Work
If last week's VACC Bike to Work Week is any indication, pedal powered
commuting is is really starting to take off in Vancouver. Despite the
rainy weather 4,564 people registered for bike to work week, logging
17,669 individual commutes for a total of 173,766km! The VACC (Vancouver
Area Cycling Association) translates this into over 32 tonnes of CO2 saved.
If you decided to ditch the bus/car last week and hop on you bike, good
job and keep up the good work. If you're not a bike commuter give it a
try. Here are a few tip to get you going:
- Hop the Bus. If the hill up to UBC seems to daunting or you live
really far from work take the bus for part of the way.
- Give your legs a break. Don't try to bike everyday when just starting out.
- Stick to the side street bike routes. They're not as quick, but most
of the traffic is other cyclists not cars flying by (maps here:
http://www.translink.ca/en/Cycling/Cycling-Routes.aspx)
- Oil your bike chain. A squeeky/rusty chain means a more tiring bike ride.
- Enjoy the ride. Go at your own pace and take in the scenery.
See you on the road,
James, for the Sustainability Club
