*Wildwood*
• Details: SEC’s annual bike trip to Wildwood has officially been scheduled! This fun trip will last for 3 days. We will bike from UBC to Horseshoe Bay, take the ferry to Nanaimo, and then bike to the Wildwood Sustainable Forest run by the Land Conservacy outside of Nanaimo. There we’ll be camping for two nights, touring the forest, relaxing and generally having a good time! This trip is open to everyone and all levels of biking ability. It will cost $45 for the three nights (SEC pays for your ferry ticket), about $15-20 of that will go towards purchasing food and $25-30 goes to The Land Conservancy, a non-profit that is raising money to purchase the land Wildwood is situated upon. This will ensure that Wildwood remains a demonstration eco-forest and isn't developed. There are only 25 spots available on this trip, so if you are interested e-mail Env...@ams.ubc.ca ASAP. Places on the trip are first-come, first-serve.

*State of the World: Transforming Cultures from Consumerism to Sustainability*
• Details: Without an intentional and proactive cultural transformation that makes it as natural to live sustainably as living as a consumer feels today, no government pledges or technological advances will be sufficient to rescue humanity from the ecological disruptions that the human species and its consumption patterns are driving. In his talk, Worldwatch Institute Senior Researcher Erik Assadourian will discuss the need for a cultural shift that reorients society on sustainability instead of consumerism and growth, and how this shift is not only possible but how cultural pioneers are already actively engaged in this global effort, through the harnessing of societal institutions that play a key role in shaping cultures. He will discuss these six institutions--namely education, business, government, the media, traditions, and social movements--and share many exciting examples of cultural transformations that are happening around the world.
