Dear Peacemaking Colleague,

Exactly one year prior to his murder on April 4, 1968, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered what many consider to be the most important speech of his life. In “Beyond Vietnam: Breaking the Silence” Dr. King called for a “true revolution of values” to combat the “giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism, and militarism” that plague American society.

On April 4, 2024, the King and Breaking Silence committee —a project of the National Council of Elders—will convene once again to mark the anniversary of King’s profound vision for our nation offered in 1967 in New York City’s Riverside Church.

Thursday April 4th at 4pm the National Council of Elders' (NCOE) project we will be hosting an intergenerational live webinar on the topic of restorative justice from Philadelphia with Reverend Donna Jones and a number of young activists who are collaborating with NCOE and Rev. Donna. Rev. Donna is an NCOE member and the leading force behind the Restorative Cities Initiative (RCI) in Philadelphia. The live event in Philadelphia is already fully booked but we encourage you to register and join us live by zoom HERE.

RCI is a coalition of neighbors and community hubs in Philadelphia working to spread restorative practices that promote peace from "the porch to City Hall." The webinar is at the beginning of a weekend gathering that will connect youth and elders engaged in healing justice and global solidarity work by naming fissures, rebuilding relationships, sharing toolkits, and fortifying the foundation for collective action in our respective local, national, and global organizing efforts.

Mckayla Warwick discusses Collective Climb, the Black-led 501c3 organization she co-founded that is empowering BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) teenagers and young adults in West Philadelphia through restorative practices.

Through its work in the Philadelphia jails, the Youth Art & Self-empowerment Project (YASP) provides space for incarcerated young people to express themselves creatively and to develop as leaders both within and beyond the prison walls. Young people who have been through the adult court system are at the forefront of YASP, leading the movement to keep young people out of adult prisons and to create new possibilities for youth around the city.
