National to Local ~ A Discussion About Healthcare

Please join other Democrats in Howard County for a discussion on
health care with

Congressman Jon Sarbanes and Glenn Schneider

Congressman Jon Sarbanes has served in the U.S. Congress since 2007.
Congressman Sarbanes has nearly two decades of experience working in
the private, public and non-profit sectors. He has been appointed to
the Energy and Commerce Committee where he serves on the Health
Subcommittee and the Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection
Subcommittee and and he is also a member of the Natural Resources
Committee with a special focus on parks and federal lands. He has
represented non-profit hospitals and senior living providers in their
mission to deliver high quality care to the people of Maryland. He has
a firsthand understanding of the pressures that rising costs and the
persistent shortage of qualified care-givers are placing on these
providers and the families they serve.

Glenn E. Schneider, MPH is the Director of Health Policy and Planning
for the Howard County Health Department. Mr. Schneider is an advocate
for affordable health insurance coverage for all Marylanders.
Schneider has been a guest speaker at many universities and
institutions across the country on the topics of community organizing,
implementing health policy, and strategic planning and is currently a
health systems adjunct professor at the University of Baltimore. Glenn
was awarded the 2008 James W. Rouse Community Builder Award from the
Howard County Democratic Party.

Hi Abby:

About one month ago I emailed the CDC with my concerns about the Columbia gyms airing Fox news.  As you may know, Larry Carson from the Sun contacted me to write an article on the subject.  Between the totally frivolous way Larry wrote the article (with inaccuracies), and his editors removed all the context of my arguments from the article (according to Larry), I ended up looking like a complete moron.  Larry encouraged me to pursue the topic with a letter to the editor - I do not want to waste my time any longer with the Sun.

At any rate, I will be out of town and unable to attend the CDC October meeting as I had hoped.  I had wanted to make the following points:
  • The Columbia gyms are private facilities
  • Fox "News" is deeply offensive to many club members - not because it has a conservative bias (I read the Wall Street Journal), but because Fox consistently reports things that simply are not true; because it organizes, promotes and funds conservative political activities; and because it has sunk the political dialogue to a level of outrageously vitriolic rhetoric that is totally absent of meaningful content.  No other news station operates in this way.
  • Because Fox "News" is so offensively politicized, many club members find it objectionable.  Therefore CA should stop airing Fox in the large public area of each of its three athletic facilities (where it now runs)
  • If CA wants to continue to run Fox News because some patrons like it, then they should air the liberally biassed (but still no where near as outrageous) MSNBC News alongside the TVs that are running Fox.

When I made this argument to Bob Bellamy and Phil Nelson at CA, I was told that I was the only person who had complained.  They would continue to air Fox and refused to air MSNBC.

At the same time that I contacted CA, I contacted my CA Board member, Alex Hekimian, who supported my position and wrote Phil Nelson telling him so.  Mr. Nelson did not reply to Mr. Hekimian.

I am not asking that CDC to take a position.  I request that CDC ask its members (and its members ask their friends) who object to CA gyms airing Fox News (especially without the counter presence of MSNBC) to contact their CA board members and say so.

Thanks for your time.

Ann,

I was actually hoping you could be there.  Why don't you write a letter and I will gladly make copies and in my comments to the membership I will give a breif overveiw and encourage them to write letters.  If you need anything else, please call me at 240-461-9803 or email me.
