Hello Climateer!

This Summer, you can be a Force for Change!  Register online today for the Northwest Student Environmental Leadership Training Program - August 10th-17th - www.ssc.org/sprog/
(Help spread the word!  Forward this email widely...)

Brought to you by the Sierra Student Coalition and the Cascade Climate Network (the folks who brought you Cascade Power Shift!), the Northwest Student Environmental Leadership Training Program (or Sprog, short for Summer Program), will feature week-long fun training sessions in organizing skills led by the nation's top student organizers.

Learn to develop effective groups that can tackle serious environmental and justice issues (particularly the climate crisis), and network with other activists to build your region's youth movement.   Then take what you've learned and put it to into action at your high school, on your campus and in your community.

LEARN:
  • Campaign Planning--Learn how to plan and run an effective campaign to make a tangible difference in your school or community.
  • Communication Skills--Learn how to define your message, work with the media, and communicate persuasively.
  • Organizing 101--Learn how to start a group, recruit and develop new leaders, facilitate effective meetings, etc.
  • Guest Speakers--You'll hear from engaging speakers from the climate and environmental movement from your area.
Of course, the program isn't all work and no play, there's a lot of FUN to be had!   While trainings will be the main focus, you can also expect to enjoy:
  • The beautiful surroundings of a serene state park
  • Hikes, games, and energizing nighttime activities
  • The company and friendship of fellow student activists
  • Coming away inspired and energized!!

ENERGY AND GLOBAL WARMING FOCUS

Global warming presents an enormous threat to the health and the sustainability of our planet. Youth everywhere are rising to the climate challenge, talking not just about the problems, but focusing on solutions--building a clean energy economy, creating millions of new green collar jobs as a pathway out of poverty and towards justice for all people and the planet.  The Sierra Student Coalition and experienced Sprog trainers can help you build the skills you need to succeed.  It's time for our schools and communities to take the lead for clean energy and challenge our political leaders to follow.  And there's no time more crucial to do that than in 2008.  Energy not your thing?   Don't worryóthe skills you'll learn at the summer program will be applicable to whatever issues excite you the most.

Cost: The subsidized cost of the program is set up on a sliding scale, from $150-200* (please pay what you can afford).  This covers tuition, room and board for the entire week, local transportation to and from the site, and all the benefits of membership in the Sierra Club (a great deal considering what you'd spend in a normal week on food and transportation!).   But don't let money concerns keep you from applying and attending; the SSC is committed to justice and anti-oppression and will work with you to make sure you can attend if you want to, either through helping you request funds from your school or local Sierra Club chapter, or you can also apply for a need-based fee waiver from the SSC. Travel scholarships are also available. [*note there is not cost for the PR, CA, or NM programs, though these programs give preference to local and/or minority students]

**Special Group Rate: $480 for 4 people/$400 for 3 people**

TESTIMONIALS:
Wondering if Sprog is worth your time?  Don't take my word for it, check out these prior SPROGers:

"Sprog was one of the most significant expereinces of my life...it introduced me to the kind of work I want to keep doing for the rest of my life, and equipped me with the tools to do just that."
ñKelsea Norris (GA), Louisiana Sprog '07

"When I arrived, I was just a rising high school junior...when I left, I was a new leader of the student environmental movement."
-Dominique Hazzard (MD), Pennsylvania Sprog '06

"Sprog opened my eyes to the possibilities for collaborating with other students and planning more ambitious campaigns.  Attending Sprog is one of the best things you can do to catapult the climate movement forward."
-Morgan Goodwin (MA), New Hampshire Sprog '07

Think of Sprog like the best summer camp you've ever been to, except instead of learning how to tie knots and build fires, you'll learn the skills that'll make you a force for change, empowering you to help build a Sustainable, Just and Prosperous Future for All!

So don't miss out on the Northwest Sprog!  Register today and join in the fun.

See you at Sprog!  Cheers,

Jesse Jenkins

What are global warming solutions? WE are global warming solutions.  We are a force for change, a force that can step outside the old energy paradigm to build the future and present that we know is possible.  People like us, acting in every community, hold the ideas and inspiration for change, and we can believe in those people as we believe in ourselves.
