February 26, 2012 a 17 year old Black male, Trayvon Martin, was shot
down and killed by a racist neighborhood "watchman" just for walking in
the neighborhood and because he "looked suspicious." The murderer,
George Zimmerman, was taken by police but then released when ...it was found that his pistol was registered. Zimmerman is claiming self defense and most likely nothing will happen to him. Eileen Myles Poetry Reading Amphitheater, 6:30PM Eileen
Myles, the author of more than twenty books of poetry, fiction,
nonfiction, plays, and libretti, including "Inferno (a poet's novel,"
"The Importance of Being Iceland," and "Sorry, Tree," is coming to AU.Myles is a Professor Emeritus of writing
& literature at UC San Diego where she taught from 2002 to 2007.
She contributes to a wide number of publications including Art Forum,
Parkett, The Believer, Vice, Cabinet, The Nation, TimeOut, Book Forum
and AnOther Magazine.
Myles has been called "the rock star of
modern poetry" by BUST Magazine and "a cult figure to a generation of
post-punk female writer-performers" by the New York Times.
She will be coming to AU to participate in a
live reading of work from her new collection of poetry, "Snowflake /
different streets," which comes out in April. The event is free and open
to all who wish to attend. Myles will take questions from the audience
following her presentation! So go RSVP on Facebook and come to the Amphitheater on Wednesday with a hookah, a book, or your feelings. Or all of the above.
