Documentary Screening of Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide

Ward 2 8:30 P.M.-10:30 P.M.

"She's the First is hosting a screening of Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. Inspired by the award winning book by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, Half the Sky was filmed in ten countries and features celebrity activists America Ferrera, Diane Lane, Eva Mendes, Meg Ryan, Gabrielle Union, and Olivia Wilde. The documentary tells the stories of how oppression is being fought all over the world, as well as tells us what opportunities we have to make a change."

"Supported by Women's Initiative, Delta Tau Delta, Delta Gamma, Chi Omega, Alpha Epsilon Phi, Phi Sigma Sigma, Fight Back/Rebuild, SIS Undergraduate Council, Alpha Chi Omega, Delta Phi Epsilon - Professional Foreign Service Fraternity, Empower Congo, Dignity for Women Worldwide, and AU Unitarian Universalists."

Admission is free and donations will be accepted at the end of the screening on behalf of the Arlington Academy of Hope.

A Dialogue on 2012

SIS Founders Room, 6 P.M.

"Student political leaders Josh Kaib (AUCR), Kathryn Tinker (AUCD), and Thadius von Main (SFL) will discuss education, jobs, and immigration, in a panel moderated by Jeff Raines and introduced by SG president Emily Yu. Expert panelists Michael Fauntroy and Wilmer Leon will discuss the economy, national security, and health care, moderated by Sylvia Hill."

Hosted by the Roosevelt Institute.

CASJ encourages a strong turnout in order to ensure a WIDE range of political and social issues are discussed thoroughly and with proper representation.

Table Talk Lunch Series: What Can Money Buy in the 2012 Election? The Role of Superpacs and Other Outside Groups.

Kay Spiritual Life Center Lounge. Lunch at 12 P.M. Discussion begins at 12:20 P.M.

The Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies will host a discussion regarding the upcoming presidential election and the role of financial lobbying in our democracy. The talk will be moderated by Professor James A. Thurber, University Distinguished Professor of Government and Founder and Director of the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies. Speakers include R. Sam Gerrett (Research Fellow and Adjunct Professor, Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies at American University, Specialist in American National Government, Congressional Research Service), Meredith McGehee (Policy Director, Campaign Legal Center), and Harold Ickes (President, Priorities USA Action-Democratic super PAC).

Tick Tock Revolution Featuring Khaled M, Remi Kanazi, Radio Rahim, Khaki Mustafa, and Johny Abudayeh

Nyumburu Cultural Center Amphitheater 6 P.M.-9 P.M.

With Sponsorship from the American University Students for Justice in Palestine, the University of Maryland Students for Justic in Palestine, Community Roots, and the Nyumburu Cultural Center, there will be a FREE all-star concert at the Nyumburu Cultural Center at the University of Maryland to kick off the semester featuring hip hop artists Khaled M and Khaki Mustafa, DJ Radio Rahim, poet Remi Kanazi, and Palestinian folk artist Johny Abudayeh.

Women, Wine, The Word: The Revival Welcome Home Concert

"THE REVIVAL 2012 with guest features DC Youth Slam Team & Rachel Eliza Griffiths

Experience dynamic performances from poets and musicians alike! THE REVIVAL weaves a salon styled night of artistry, libations and genuine fellowship. Historically, queer collectives have hosted artist 'salons'in their homes-- because there was nowhere else to go. This effort honors a tradition born out of necessity, and is at once a sanctuary and a concert."

The event is free for all American University students and alumni with university ID, otherwise tickets in-advance are $15 and tickets at the door will $20.
