Dear SARPAM Community and Network

I hope that this email finds you all well and hard at access to medicines activities.

It gives me great pleasure to attach the Health and Medicines Sector Market Assessment in Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and South Africa, which was publically launched at the Inclusive Healthcare and Innovation Summit hosted by the University of Cape Town's Faculty of Health Sciences and Graduate School of Business Bertha Centre for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

The report has been exceedingly well received and we are currently looking at extending the series to other Southern African countries through a mix of public and private sector funding. We've had a lot of learnings from this process which we will be incorporating into future assessments.

This assessment was conducted based on feedback received from potential investors in the Africa Medicines Impact Investment Fund (AMIIF) requesting a private sector market assessment which would support the investment hypothesis of the Fund.

These countries were chosen as they represent the most 'investor friendly' nations in the region and thus were identified as having the greatest potential to address potential investor requirements. On this basis the market assessment has been a significant success and reinforces the value of (AMIIF) in the region.

From a market perspective there is an enormous potential role identified for the private sector to play in the future, especially in addressing the rapid increase in lifestyle diseases.

The process has unearthed some interesting investment opportunities which we are currently working with to increase their "bankability" and to gear their access to medicines impact. What has become very apparent is that the enormous amount resources allocated previously to this sector for incubators and accelerators etc. has had little or no impact on the ground.

There remains an unhealthy obsession with the latest "sexy" idea as opposed to working with existing, sustainable enterprises to gear their impact in innovative ways. So we are finding a large demand for technical assistance.

The sustainable enterprises want to do more and want to have a greater impact, and are not afraid to ask for help. Which is fantastic as in many cases it means that we do not have to reinvent the wheel.

Please do circulate the market assessment report to your networks - especially potential investors in AMIIF!

We would welcome any feedback that we can use to inform future market assessments.

All the best,
Oliver
