Greetings, friends of CACOR!

Over 5 years ago, inspired by the COVID pandemic, CACOR embarked on an initiative to transform our monthly CACOR Live lunch and speaker presentations to a weekly online virtual presentation of experts in our diverse interest areas from around the world.  That program has been remarkably successful, bringing hundreds of sessions to our participants AND popular YouTube channel.

But here's the thing...

Before Zoom, the only people who came to our CACOR Live lunch presentations were members or invited guests.  For many guests, this became their way of discovering the intellectual richness of our organization, and they joined up as full members soon after.  Meeting face-to-face, we were also able to remind people of membership renewals, and often collect those dues on the spot.

Times have changed.

During COVID, it made sense to throw the net wide, and welcome CACOR Live audience participants not just within our ranks, but from all over the world.  And why not?  No one thought it would cost extra to have extra participants attending the session, hearing the speaker live, asking questions afterwards, and then participating in the open discussion that follows the recording.

But we were wrong.

By taking a key benefit of membership and making it free and available to all, we now see that our membership revenue is slipping, and new memberships are not being added.  Why?  Our best guess is that when everyone continues to get free invitations to our most popular benefit, week after week, why bother to become a full member?  And, with the less-personable nature of Zoom, no one is taking the time to remind people face-to-face that their renewal is due.

A professional Zoom license may not cost a lot, but the background infrastructure of websites, IT support, video support, and more - well, that's beginning to add up.  The CACOR Board of Directors has discussed this challenge, reviewed the stats, and determined that we should differentiate between being able to watch any CACOR Live video at any time (on our YouTube channel) versus having the privilege of attending live sessions, posing questions to the presenter, sharing chat-room observations, and jumping in to the rich discussions that follow each session.  The first is something we want the world to enjoy.  The second is a very clear benefit for our paid Members and Associates, and we need to respect that.

So, over the coming weeks, we will be introducing some changes:
  1. We will be phasing out our global notifications of CACOR Live sessions (on the forums this message is being shared on), and switching over to personal invitations addressed to each CACOR Member and Associate.

  2. The session notifications will likely change from 6-days, 2-days, and 1-hour in advance, to just 6-days and 1-day in advance, to be kinder to your inboxes.  (As CACOR member account holders, you can always turn off Event Notifications, if you would rather not get these.)

  3. Each weekly speaker will still be very welcome to invite their own guests to their own presentation.

  4. Everyone, regardless of membership status, will still receive notifications of when new CACOR Live videos are added to our YouTube channel, etc.
The key message here is that we don't want to restrict ANY of you from being a valued member of our CACOR Live participant groups.  All we ask is that you recognize that value by supporting our work in some way.

If you have never been part of CACOR, there is a simple application for Full Membership, but being an Associate Member is open to anyone.  For more information on joining and other benefits please see our membership page.

If you used to be a paid member in the past, we would love to help you to renew.  Instructions can be found on our membership website on this page.  If it asks for a password to access your account and it's expired or forgotten, you can contact our Membership Coordinator (David Hutton, Membe...@CanadianCOR.com) and he'll reset it for you.

If you are already a paid up member, there's no real change.  Unless you'd like to gift CACOR Live (and more benefits) to others...!  (See the P.S.)

Best regards,

Andrew Welch
Chair of the CACOR Board

P.S.  Did you hear about the great new opportunity to introduce a friend to CACOR, and support us at the same time?  There's now an easy way to 'register' for a Gift Associate Membership ($50).  The recipient will receive a smart-looking Gift Certificate, announcing your generosity and listing the benefits they will enjoy for a full year, AND you will receive a charitable tax receipt for the full amount.  Click HERE to make it happen.

ALL the many specialist guests and presentations are very interesting......

HOWEVER, does CACOR have an objective or strategic purpose to develop a concise program recommendation to the federal government / Prime Minister's Office to focus on HOW CANADA CAN DEAL WITH CLIMATE CHANGE BEFORE CLIMATE CHANGE KILLS US ALL?

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Philippe Roy.

Philippe ... Thanks for your query. I too have wondered why CACOR hasn't been more politically active.

It is like all things within an organization of volunteers: who will take the lead and invest hundreds of hours of their time in making this happen?  If you wish to take the lead, I am sure there will be many within CACOR who would cheer you on.

for Phillipe Roy - any suggestions to the feds about "ending climate change before it kills us all" would have to include a drastic reduction in fossil fuels, a major agricultural transformation, and Canada taking a global leadership position because no one else is and we can...

I think one way CACOR could contribute is by making an official response to the draft 2026–2029 Federal Sustainable Development Strategy (FSDS) which outlines the Government of Canada’s sustainable development priorities, establishes corresponding goals and targets, and identifies federal plans to achieve them. I have attached a rough draft of my personal response. My position is that CC is only a symptom of one of the many issues that stem from our mistaken concept of "Sustainable Development" and that attempts to solve these existential  issues without them being included in an overall plan to address the root problem of OVERSHOOT will not work. My thoughts, Lynn Oliphant, emeritus prof. Uof S (306-374-1068)
