New data shows more Canadians are switching to heat pumps, especially in the Maritimes | De nouvelles données montrent que de plus en plus de Canadiens et Canadiennes adoptent la thermopompe, surtout dans les Maritimes

 THIS WEEK'S INSIGHT

Heat pumps are quietly reshaping how Canadians heat and cool their homes. The latest national data reveal just how rapidly uptake is growing, with Maritime installs quickly taking over the market.

Heat pumps are an incredibly energy efficient option for heating and cooling homes in Canada and are increasingly becoming the technology of choice for more Canadians

And while the number of heat pumps installed across the country remains relatively modest, that could be changing. Our latest Insight looks at new Statistics Canada data that shows households across the country are rapidly adopting heat pumps as their primary heating source. In some Maritime provinces,  such as New Brunswick, nearly half of households have already made the switch.

The story isn’t just urban, either. The numbers show that rural Canada is taking to heat pumps at a higher rate than the rest of the country, challenging common assumptions about where clean tech adoption happens first.

We’ve taken a quick look into what’s driving this growth—from surging fuel oil prices to policy support—to get a better picture on this positive data trend.

By the numbers

  • 9% — Share of Canadian households now using heat pumps as their main heating source (up three points from just two years earlier)
  • 48% — Share of New Brunswick homes heated primarily by heat pumps
  • 15% — Share of rural (non-CMA) households using heat pumps in 2023, triple the rate in 2013
  • 10-16 percentage points — the range of market share heat pumps gained in just a two year period in Maritime provinces of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick.
