From this morning's CBC Morning Brief: Today is the anniversary of the Montreal Protocol. CACOR member Vic Buxton played the lead role for Canada in securing this international agreement.

1987: Twenty-four countries signed the Montreal Protocol, meant to protect the ozone layer. It's considered one of the most successful global environmental deals in history.

I had the privilege of organising and running the tenth anniversary, also in Montreal, my last job for the federal taxpayer.

The Montreal Protocol is working. The ozone layer is recovering.

Here is what the US EPA has to say:

Atmospheric levels of ozone-depleting substances () rapidly increased before the implementation of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and its subsequent revisions and amendments. However, the atmospheric levels of nearly all these substances have declined substantially in the past two decades.

Additional Information

Continued declines in ODS emissions are expected to result in a near complete recovery of the ozone layer near the middle of the 21st century. The long time scale for this recovery is due to the slow rate at which ODS are removed from the atmosphere by natural processes.

Cheers,

John

Thanks for this report, John.

Vic, this is a feather in your cap. How many other CACOR members are remembered today?
