Summary:
The planet has already reached around 1.5°C of warming, and current trajectories put us on track to exceed 2°C. Crossing that threshold risks triggering powerful climate feedback loops that could push global heating to 3, 4 or even 5°C - and so, to human extinction. This outcome is not inevitable, but at this point it is the most likely path unless we radically change course.
When the public can no longer deny this reality, revolutions are inevitable. The question is not whether revolutions will happen, but what kind they will be: pro-social and democratic, or authoritarian and fascist. We must do everything we can to ensure there it is the former.
In this talk, I will explore what a pro-social revolution of the 21st century could look like, and how we can help bring it into being.
Biography:
Roger Hallam is a well-known rebel and someone with first-hand experience of civil resistance and was ranked as the 34th most influential person shaping Britain’s progressive politics by The New Statesman. He researched the dynamics of mass mobilisations at King's College for five years and has been at the forefront of climate campaigning for many years. He is the co-founder of Extinction Rebellion, probably the world’s most high-profile climate crisis movement. His actions are grounded in a belief that peaceful public disruption is effective and justified in the face of social collapse as the crisis escalates. Roger has been involved in many acts of civil disobedience, leading to over thirty arrests and four periods of imprisonment. He has recently been released from prison after over a year inside.
