Summary:

The geology of the rocks underlying the National Capital Region has had a major impact on how the area has developed, water quality across the region, susceptibility to landslides, and flooding.  Understanding how the geology affects the area in which residents live can help them understand why the NCR has unique problems that need to be considered when making development decisions and plans for the future.

Biography:

Jean Dougherty is a retired biologist and geologist who spent her 36 year career with the Geological Survey of Canada.  Her primary role had been to manage the extensive collections of the GSC, in particular, the fossil collections housed in Ottawa.  Dealing with all the GSC collections gave her a national perspective of the geology across the country.  These collections, especially the fossil collection, are used to understand the vast geologic history of Canada, providing a timescale for this history, understanding how Canada’s landmass has changed through time, and at what rate this change has occurred.  Today, this highly informative science underpins our understanding of anthropogenic climate change and provides primary evidence that this change is happening.

Jean is a long time member of CACOR and is a former chair of the organization.
