An article in the Globe and Mail today.

Ottawa is preparing to lay out a new climate-change vision that will deprioritize Canada’s commitments to reduce domestic greenhouse gas emissions, in favour of focusing on ways to reap economic advantage from the global transition toward low-carbon energy.

Mr. Carney's climate strategy will need to strike a tough balance between economic concerns and environmental ones.

As CACOR pointed out in its Pathways report, Canada has failed to meet any of the targets that it has set and will miss those in the future. It is not alone. The train has left the station on a downhill track. Will Carney recognise, as CACOR member Ian Burton pointed out decades ago, that adaptation is an essential subject for policy?

I suggest that decades of going for "
a balance between the environment and the economy" has proven it is a tactic that cannot work to get us a sustainable society.

Hard to know how to interpret this before seeing the plan, but if it means dropping (or at least drastically reducing) his support for CCS, LNG,  and emission caps, in favor of putting that money towards support for renewables, then it could be a positive sign of reversal on Carney’s part.  Of course, there is also the threat of federal pipeline support, which should not happen.

A solid committal to ‘invest’ in renewables along with electric grid improvements, and reviving things like EV incentives, would almost certainly start an economic boom, and eventually start a significant drop in fossil fuel demand.

Have to wait and see . . .
