China has been installing solar panels far faster than anywhere else in the world, and the investment is starting to pay off. A study released Thursday found that the country’s carbon emissions edged down one per cent in the first six months of 2025 compared to a year earlier, extending a trend that began in March 2024.
I have left just one photo in this version, which shows the scale of the solar panels.
John,
I noticed that same article, which is one of the few positive bits of news these days, especially when China has been ‘the’ major source of emissions for some years now. I also compare this news with what I’ve been observing in atmospheric CO2 data this year. For the last two years, the ‘year-over-year’ average monthly increases in CO2 has ranged from 3-3.5 ppm (i.e., each month is that much higher than the previous year). It reached a high of 4.4 ppm in February 2024, then maintained 2.7-3.5 ppm right up until Feb. 2025, when values suddenly dropped to 2-2.5 ppm (values not seen since the early 2000s), except one month (May) when it was 3.8 ppm. So far this month, August 01-22, 2025, we are averaging just 2.2 ppm higher than last year. I should plot those numbers into as graph, as that will show its significance, but I don’t have time today.
This reduction in CO2 may (or may not) be a result of those events in China – they do coincide, so I think it is. Regardless, it is very significant, and we can hope that it continues, despite whatever devilry Trump is up to. We DO need some good news now and then, for sure.
