Does anyone know one way or the other whether a Rocna Mark II 12 (27 lb) anchor is a good fit for a 320 on the Chesapeake? Specifically does it fit well on the bow roller? Does it set and hold well in mud. We've had some issues with our traditional Danforth look-alike that came with the boat in recent years, including ending up on a beach one morning (fortunately with no waves). In that storm the Danforth held for 3 days of high winds in one direction, and then gave out on the third night. We were riding out a nor-easter up one of the creeks.

The Rocna Mark II 12 specs list it as appropriate for 33 foot boats up to 6.5 tons displacement. The flukes extend 8.6 inches back from the front of the bow roller and 5.3 inches below the center line of the roller. I'm not near the boat to measure myself whether those clearances are sufficient.

Given that we frequently anchor in relatively shallow water (less than 15 feet) I probably will not use more than 20 feet of chain with whichever anchor I buy.

The Rocna Mark II 15 (33 lbs) is a step up in holding power, rated at 9.5 tons for a 33 foot boat. But it's 6 pounds heavier. Definitely adds a better margin of holding power, provided my aging shoulders, back, and arms can lift it along with 20 feet of chain.

Asking because I've seen the Rocna's on sale this weekend.

It’s perfect for the 320. I have a Rocna 15.

I’ve went a little overboard perhaps with a ROCNA 33. No problem with the anchor roller deploying or retreating.

I assume you mean the 15, which weighs 33 pounds (about 15 Kg).

Scott, there is a pic in our Owner's Gallery that shows a Rocna 15 on our
bow roller. I posted the pic some time ago in response to reports that
this anchor would not fit our boats, but obviously it does on ours.

Does anyone know the width of our galley sink? I hate to drive 35
minutes each way..... my friend has a tiny dehumidifier...

I have a 15kg Rochna on my 320 MK II and have never dragged and unless the winds are above 25 kts I sleep well. The other aspect to consider is chain length I have 40 m of 8 mm chain.

This combination works very well for me.

And I always use a minimum of 5:1 rode length to depth.

Cheers, Ian.

I have a 35-pound Manson Supreme with 80 feet of 8 mm chain. I upgraded from a Rocna 22-pounder with 30 feet of chain after I was struck by a water spout in the middle of the night off Tarpon Springs, Fl. We got dragged a quarter mile, thankfully in a bay, before I started the engine and got out of it.

Originally, the Manson was a bear because I only had the OEM chainless Maxwell windlass. I got lots of exercise hauling it up. Two changes helped a lot.

First, I bought the new version of the Maxwell 500 that handles chain. Second, I bought a heavy duty anchor swivel (Suncor, I think) that positions the anchor properly as it is being hauled up. Before, the anchor would often come up reversed and be a bear to pull up and adjust to the proper position.

One more anchoring note for 320s:

If you sail in an area with significant tidal changes, the wing keel 320 is vulnerable to the anchor rode wrapping around the keel. Most of the time, you have to jump in to unwrap it. There are two ways to avoid this.

First, of course, is all chain, which droops straight down and doesn't go near the keel. Second is to use a kellet. I used a 10-pound mushroom anchor that I clipped to the anchor rode and tied to a 20-foot nylon line. I held the rode just below the bow in light winds (wraps generally come in calms) and away from the keel.

In really strong winds, the kellet is also useful to add some holding power to chain.

I'd second Jack's comments below - We used to get a wrap about every 2 days
or so, anchored in the field at Nantucket, thanks to fast flowing tides,
rope rode and variable winds. Kellet sorted it out.
If you do get a wrap however then the most reliable way I found to getting
out of it was to tow the uptide stern quarter, uptide, to relieve tension on
the rode then across tide in the direction the stern was previously lying
before easing back and allowing the boat to drift back down tide outside the
loop of rode. I found this doable with a 6hp outboard on a mercury 310 rib
but perhaps not easy with less power. During the process my wife had the
main engine on but in neutral so that if necessary she could deal with the
anchor popping out, which thankfully it never did! All hail the mighty
rocna!
