Remote Job

27 months contract

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Mainframe Developer to join our enterprise technology team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the design, development, maintenance, and optimization of mission-critical applications running on IBM z/OS Mainframe platforms. This role operates within a fast-paced financial services environment where reliability, performance, and security are of the highest priority. You will collaborate closely with architects, business analysts, and cross-functional technology teams to deliver scalable, high-performance solutions that support core business operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain batch and online COBOL/CICS applications on IBM z/OS Mainframe platforms.
  • Write and optimize complex DB2 SQL queries, stored procedures, and manage relational database performance tuning.
  • Develop and maintain JCL procedures, scripts, and job streams for batch processing and production scheduling.
  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle (SDLC) including requirements gathering, technical design, coding, unit testing, and production support.
  • Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve complex production issues and performance bottlenecks in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with business analysts and architects to translate functional requirements into efficient technical solutions.
  • Support code migrations and deployments using version control tools such as Endevor, ISPF, or ChangeMan.
  • Ensure all code meets quality standards through peer reviews, unit testing, and adherence to development best practices.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation including design specifications, runbooks, and operational guides.
  • Actively participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies including sprint planning, retrospectives, and daily stand-ups.
  • Mentor junior developers and provide technical guidance on Mainframe development standards and practices.
  • Work with security and compliance teams to ensure applications meet regulatory and audit requirements applicable to financial services.

Required Technical Skills

  • 5+ years of hands-on Mainframe development experience in a large-scale enterprise environment.
  • Strong proficiency in COBOL (Enterprise COBOL) — both batch and online (CICS) programming.
  • In-depth experience with IBM DB2 for z/OS — SQL, query optimization, and performance tuning.
  • Solid working knowledge of JCL (Job Control Language), procedures, and batch job scheduling tools (e.g., CA-7, TWS/OPC).
  • Experience with VSAM file structures (KSDS, RRDS, ESDS) and sequential file processing.
  • Proficiency with ISPF/PDF, SDSF, and RACF or equivalent security tools.
  • Working knowledge of source control and change management tools such as Endevor, ChangeMan, or SCLM.
  • Familiarity with MQ Series (IBM MQ) for message queuing and integration with distributed systems.
  • Experience with TSO/ISPF environments and z/OS system utilities.
  • Understanding of Mainframe performance monitoring tools (e.g., IBM Omegamon, CA Mainview, or equivalent).

Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Experience with PL/I, Assembler, or REXX scripting is a strong plus.
  • Exposure to Mainframe modernization efforts including integration with Java, REST APIs, or microservices.
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices for Mainframe (e.g., IBM IDz, Broadcom Code4z, or similar toolsets).
  • Knowledge of IMS DB/DC or Natural/ADABAS environments.
  • Experience in a financial services or capital markets technology environment.
  • Understanding of SOX, PCI-DSS, or other compliance frameworks relevant to mainframe environments.
  • Knowledge of zOS Connect or similar tools for Mainframe-to-cloud API integration.

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • IBM Certified Application Developer – CICS, DB2, or z/OS certifications are highly desirable.
