Job Description:
The primary
responsibilities include designing and installing electrical subsystems on
small robots and other ground-based vehicles and coordinating design and
installations under the direction of senior electrical and/or mechanical
engineers. Design includes electrical topology of Drive By Wire systems (what
parts, where and how to connect them) based on similar systems. This includes
harness design and pin mapping (similar to reverse engineering), as well as
building and testing wiring harnesses, troubleshooting, repairing, and
modifying electrical wiring where necessary and applying principles and
theories of electronics, electrical circuitry, and electronic and electrical
testing. Examples of troubleshooting include analyzing serial bus (i.e. CAN)
electrical signals and data.
May be required to do some: Electronic modules programming, lay out, build,
test, troubleshoot, repair, and modify developmental electronic components,
parts, equipment, and systems, such as computer equipment, test equipment, and
machine tool numerical controls, applying principles and theories of
electronics, electrical circuitry, engineering mathematics, electronic and
electrical testing, and physics. Usually work under direction of more senior
engineering staff, with little to no supervision. Gaining or has attained full
proficiency in a specific area of discipline.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Designs Electrical System diagrams including harnesses.
• Works closely with other engineers on routing harnesses and placing electronic
modules.
• Programs embedded modules (logical visual programming language).
• Assembles and tests experimental wiring harnesses, electronic modules, and
other electrical equipment and components.
• Troubleshoots electrical prototypes to correct functional deviations.
• Diagnoses cause of electrical or mechanical malfunctions or failures of
operational equipment and performs preventive and corrective actions.
• Works from wiring diagrams, layout drawings, and engineering specifications
for system or equipment modifications or expansion and performs installation.
• Adjusts and replaces defective or improperly functioning circuitry and
electronics components, using hand tools and soldering iron.
• Tests electronics units, using standard test equipment, and analyze results
to evaluate performance and determine need for adjustment.
• Plans, completes, and records periodic electrical testing, and recommends or
initiates modification or replacement of equipment which fails to meet
acceptable operating standards.
• May perform preventative maintenance and calibration of equipment and
systems.
• Maintains working knowledge of state-of-the-art tools or software by reading
