Hi Folks, just taken delivery of my co lathe, it has what appears to
be a set-over tailstock. Can this be used to correct centering
problem? there is no mention of it in the manual nor is it shown in
the exploaded parts diagram. I found a cheap 4 jaw chuck from the
unimat classic range just needs a backplate or the body boring out and
re tapping to 14mm, its made of some sort of plastic but it seems
quite strong, it will tide me over till I can get a better one. As a
first project I plan to make a Stuart Oscilator, has anyone built one
of these little engines? any tips would be greatfully recieved.
Regards,
Nick

Are you able to send a picture please Nick?

Here is a picture of a prototype set-over tailstock, but I didn't think it
had gone into production.

No, it is not a full solution to the centering problem, though it can help.

It can centre the tailstock sideways.

Shims (either at the head or tail end) can centre it vertically.

Neither shims nor a set-over tailstock can deal with a headstock or
tailstock that is at an angle to the bed.

David

Hi Nick,
I fitted a Unimat plastic chuck to my C-0 see attachment. It threads
straight onto the lathes mandrel alas I cannot remember what modifications
were required. I do have a 14mm tap so it might be just that. The chuck
works OK but it is only possible to take light cuts when using it and
because the jaws are plastic with a certain amount of 'spring' it is
difficult to set up. Many years ago well before the advent of the C-0 I
built a small single cylinder Stuart Turner oscillating engine, the name
'Eclipse' comes to mind. It worked very well and should be within the
capabilities of the C-0. I cannot remember its construction but if I can be
of any help please ask.
Regards Tony.

hi there, many thanks for your reply, yes, that is the one, cant send any photos at the minute,I need a new camera, having lowered a 6 cylinder foden marine engine on to my present one, which as you could imagine, did it no good at all. I will post photos when a replcment camera has been bought.

Hi David, is there any chance you can follow up the availability of the set over tailstock please.

Regards Terry.

Hi Nick,
A photograph won't be necessary if the tailstock on your lathe looks like the photograph David has posted.
Regards Tony.

I am glad to see some activity on here. I am currently building the
stuart oscillator. http://www.stuartmodels.com/inprod_det.cfm/section/casting/mod_id/51

I have had to put the project on hold at the moment, but I think that
the C0 should be capable of building it.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Best Regards,
Robert

The bit for which you may need access to a larger lathe is the cylinder,
depending on what material it is.

I have a two-cylinder Puffin engine that I built up from a machined kit,
and it's very good.
[The current Puffin is r-t-r only at an eye-watering price!

I remeber that the original C-0 had good drawings for a tailstock die holder.  Did anyone save a copy to post to this new group???

Thanks

Hi Bob, thanks for the info, I will probably machine the cylinder on the faceplate. Its the entablature that I think may present a problem, althrough I havent got the casting set yet, I have already done some "imaginary machining" and started making a plan, I am going to get a peatol vertical slide, hopefully that should fit the bill (where theres a will theres a way). watch this space.
Regards,
Nick.

Thanks Terry. I have seen that one, The peatol one may be a little larger, I'm also a bit lazy!
