Seeking an experienced Web 2.0 developer in Vermont, with a focus on PHP. We need a solid team player to help our remote development team build a new voice-based civic engagement Web application. Our app connects constituents with their elected officials by delivering and tracking voice messages, while providing a fun, novel tool for people to engage with the political system in a more meaningful way. Initially, this position will be part-time and on a contract basis, the main purpose being to provide support to our development team out of Boston.
My name is Benjamin, and I live in the Burlington area. I’m a serial entrepreneur, part-time homesteader, tech geek, citizen lobbyist on several local issues – and now founder of this exciting new tech start-up in the political advocacy space. We’re bootstrapping our way to a market presence in Montpelier, before seeking outside capital and/or partners in order to expand our model into neighboring states, and eventually into all fifty states and Washington, DC.
I’m also a board member of the Vermont Grass Farmers Association. It’s my passion for Vermont’s working landscape and local economy that ultimately inspired me to engage the legislative process as a concerned citizen. My experiences last year with Vermont’s antiquated communications technology, which limits how we citizens can contact and interact with our legislators, sparked the idea and invigorated the entrepreneur within. It’s an important problem that needs solving, and since March I’ve invested my personal time and resources into building a team to make it happen.
For seven months, I’ve been hunkered down in front of a computer screen doing my due diligence; I’ve reached out to various potential stakeholders; I’ve vetted my ideas and gathered feedback. Now, with much of my own money personally invested in this project, and with well over one thousand hours of my own time invested in R&D, the seed I planted has finally germinated. I’ve just green-lighted my development team to begin working on the beta version. We’re also currently storyboarding and planning for a Kickstarter campaign to help raise more seed capital. It’s truly an exciting time for us and, come January, for all citizens of Vermont who want a free and fun new tool with which to hold their elected officials accountable!
If you are a skilled PHP coder familiar with modern web development technologies, preferably live in Vermont, are passionate about improving local government, and also value knowing your farmer, great local food and drink, local economy and spending time in nature, then you, my friend, are a great candidate for this position! Please email me your cover letter, resume, professional references (at least three) and your portfolio (or links to sample work) right away. I look forward to hearing from you soon!
