E a entrada é livre! What's Still Missing in Google Chrome? Posted: 15 Jun 2010 09:25 AM PDT When Google released Chrome almost two years ago, many people complained that Google's browser lacked basic features that were available in all the other browsers, it didn't support extensions and could only be installed in Windows. Since then, Google Chrome has added many missing features (bookmark manager, form autofill, options for disabling cookies, images and scripts, full-page zoom, themes, extensions), the browser has been ported to Mac and Linux and it continues to be fast and to evolve rapidly. While Google Chrome focuses on implementing useful features for improving the transition to web apps (HTML5 features, cloud printing, desktop notifications, extensions for web apps, Native Client, WebGL), many basic features are still missing. Google Chrome still can't print selected text and lacks print preview (both features should be available in Google Chrome 6), you still can't drag text from a tab to another tab, there's no way to find the size of an image or to automatically clear the cache when closing the browser. What other basic features would you like to see in Google Chrome? Please keep in mind that Google Chrome is a minimalist browser and it shouldn't include features that would be used by a small number of people or features that could be implemented as extensions. ![]() Google Chrome's homepage in Google Chrome 1 ![]() Google Chrome's homepage in Google Chrome 5 |

Game Development for Android: A Quick Primer Posted: 15 Jun 2010 10:33 AM PDT ![]() [This post is by Chris Pruett, an outward-facing Androider who focuses on the world of games. — Tim Bray] If you attended Google I/O this year, you might have noticed the large number of game developers showing off their stuff in the Android part of the Developer Sandbox. Unity, EA, Com2Us, Polarbit, Laminar Research, and several others demonstrated high-end games running on Android devices. Part of my role as a Game Developer Advocate for Android is to field requests for information about Android from game developers, and in the last six months the number of requests has gone through the roof. Since there’s clearly a huge amount of interest in Android game development, here’s an overview of how Android games work and what you as a developer should know. Step One: Decide on a Target Device ClassThere are basically two types of devices running Android that you should consider: lower-end devices like the G1 (which I’ll call “first generation” devices), and high-end devices like the Nexus One (”second generation” devices). Though there are a lot of different Android phones on the market, they fall rather neatly into these two classes when it comes to CPU and graphics performance, which are the variables that game developers usually care the most about. ![]() First generation devices are generally phones with HVGA screens, running Android 1.5 or 1.6 (though a few are starting to make their way to 2.1), typically with an 500mhz CPU and hardware accelerated OpenGL ES 1.0 backend. A large number of devices sport internals similar to the G1 (Qualcomm MSM7K CPU/GPU at ~500mhz), so the G1 is representative of this class (and can be safely considered the low end of the spectrum). Based on my tests, these devices can push about 5000 textured, colored, unlit vertices per frame and still maintain 30 frames per second. Using OpenGL ES to draw, I can get just over 250 animating sprites on the screen at 30 frames per second (at 60 fps I can draw just over 100 sprites per frame). These aren’t hard numbers; my benchmarks are fairly primitive, and I’m sure that they can be improved (for example, I haven’t done tests using the GL_OES_point_sprite extension, which the G1 supports). But they should give you an idea of what the first generation class of devices can do. Second generation devices generally have WVGA screens, much faster CPUs and GPUs, and support for OpenGL ES 2.0. The Nexus One and Verizon Droid by Motorola are both good examples of this class. These devices seem to be about 5x faster than the first generation devices when it comes to raw OpenGL 1.0 performance (I can get at least 27,000 textured unlit colored vertices per frame at 30 frames per second on all of the second generation devices I’ve tested). Using OpenGL ES 2.0 can be even faster, as these devices typically incur some overhead translating OpenGL ES 1.0 commands to their 2.0-native graphics hardware. However, the large screens on these devices often mean that they are fill-bound: the cost of filling the screen with pixels is high enough that it’s often not possible to draw faster than 30 frames per second, regardless of scene complexity. Since there is a pretty wide performance delta between the first generation class of devices and the second, you should be careful when selecting a target. Based on our metrics about Android versions, first generation devices represent over half of all of the Android phones on the market (as of this writing, anyway; 2.0 devices are growing very quickly). Those games that are able to scale between the first and second generation devices have the largest audience. Step Two: Pick a LanguageIf you’re an Android app programmer who’s thinking about getting into game development, chances are you are planning on writing code in Java. If you’re a game development veteran who’s thinking of bringing games to Android, it’s likely that you prefer to do everything in C++. The side-scrolling action game that I wrote, Replica Island, is entirely Java. It uses OpenGL ES 1.0 to draw and is backwards compatible to Android 1.5. It runs at a good frame rate (close to 60 fps on the G1) across almost all Android devices. In fact, many of the popular games on Android Market were written in Java, so if you’re the type of person who finds coding in C++ like speaking in tongues, you can rest easy in the knowledge that Java on Android is perfectly viable for games. That said, native code is the way to go if your game needs to run as fast as possible. We’ve just released the fourth revision of our Native Development Kit for Android, and it includes a number of improvements that are particularly useful to game developers. Using the NDK, you can compile your code into a shared library, wrap it in a thin Java shell to manage input and lifecycle events, and do all of the heavy lifting in C++ with regular OpenGL ES APIs. As of Revision 4, you can also draw directly into Java Bitmap pixel buffers from native code, which should be faster than loading bitmaps as GL textures every frame for 2D games that want to do their own scene compositing. Revision 4 also (finally!) includes gdb support for debugging your native code on the device. You should know that when using the NDK, you don’t have access to Android Framework APIs. There’s no way, for example, to play audio from C++ (though we announced at Google I/O our intention to support OpenSL ES in the future). Some developers use the AudioTrack API to share a direct buffer with native code that mixes and generates a PCM stream on the fly, and many call from C++ into the Java SoundPool interface. Just be aware that for this type of work, a jump through JNI back into Java code is required. Step Three: Carefully Design the Best Game EverOnce you have a target system spec and have decided on a development environment, you’re off and running. But before you get too deep into your epic ragdoll physics-based space marine action online RPG with branching endings and a morality system, take a minute to think about your end users. Specifically, there are two areas that require consideration for Android games that you might not be used to: texture compression and input systems. Texture compression is a way to (surprise!) compress your texture data. It can improve draw performance and let you pack more texture into vram. The problem with texture compression is that different graphics card vendors support different texture formats. The G1 and other MSM7k devices support ATI’s ATITC compression format. The Droid supports PowerVR’s PVRTC format. Nvidia’s Tegra2 platform supports the DXT format. The bad news is, these formats are not compatible. The good news is, all OpenGL ES 2.0 devices (including the Snapdragon-based Nexus One, the OMAP3-based Droid, and Tegra2 devices) support a common format called ETC1. ETC1 isn’t the best texture format (it lacks support for alpha channels), and it isn’t supported on the first generation devices, but it’s the most common format supported (the Android SDK provides a compressor utility (see sdk/tools/etc1tool) and runtime tools for this format). The bottom line is that if you compress your textures, you’ll need to somehow provide different versions of those textures compressed with different formats. You could do this all in a single apk, or you could download textures from a web site over HTTP, or you could use ETC1 and restrict yourself to only OpenGL ES 2.0 devices. For Replica Island, I just chose not to compress my textures at all and had no problems. You can query the GL_EXTENSIONS string to see what the device you are currently running on supports.
You should also think carefully about how your game will be played. Some phones have a trackball, some have a directional pad, some have a hardware keyboard, some support multitouch screens. Others have none of those things. Per the Compatibility Definition Document, all Android devices that have Android Market are required to have a touch screen and three-axis accelerometer, so if you can get away with just tilt and single touch, you don’t need to worry about input much. If you want to take advantage of the various input devices that these phones support (which, based on several thousand comments on Android Market about Replica Island, I wholeheartedly recommend), the Android API will package the events up for you in a standard way. ![]() That said, one of the most dramatic lessons I learned after shipping Replica Island is that users want customizable controls. Even if you have added perfect support for every phone, many users will want to go in and tweak it. Or they prefer the hardware keyboard over their phone’s dpad. Or they prefer tilt controls over trackball controls. My advice: plan on providing customizable controls, both so that you can support phones that have input configurations that you didn’t consider, and also so that you can allow users to tweak the experience to match their preferences. Step Four: Profit! The rest is up to you. But before you go, here are a few resources that might come in handy:

Posted: 16 Jun 2010 07:39 AM PDT In the June 2010 survey we received responses from 206,956,723 sites. This month's numbers show a mixed picture with two of the five major web servers gaining hostnames in the last month and the other three recording losses. A similar trend was recorded for active sites. The largest increase in the number of hostnames served was for Google, which gained 3M due to increased activity at Blogger. The other web server to do better this month than last was Microsoft which served 1.8M more hostnames, 1.2M in the United States. This was not the result of a single increase, but significant growth at Microsoft Corp, GoDaddy Inc and VPLS Inc. nginx was the largest overall loser of hostnames, serving 2.2M fewer than last month. 1.6M of this loss came in China as a result of drops at China Telecom, China Unicom and the Data Communications Bureau of Tianjin Province; the result of stale blogs at sohu.com, blogbus.com and hexun.com being expired from the survey. Apache served 871k fewer hostnames worldwide and although not the largest overall loser, this figure actually masks much larger changes that occurred in individual countries. The most significant took place in opposing directions in the United States and the United Kingdom. Apache served 2M more hostnames in the UK this month as a result of colossal growth at Real International Business Co, which saw an increase of more than 1.9M hostnames. However, all of the new hostnames attributed to them in the survey resolve to a single IP address. Meanwhile, in the US, Apache lost 3M hostnames at ThePlanet.com resulting in an overall loss of 2.5M in the country. The vast majority of these expired sites are due to Netcraft expiring stale accounts on the xorg.pl redirection service out of the survey. Total Sites Across All Domains

Passem a palavra. UPDATE: Sim, funciona no Meo Satélite.

On Google Chrome's Lack of Native Support for Feeds Posted: 17 Jun 2010 12:59 PM PDT Google Chrome is the only popular browser that doesn't have native support for feeds: it doesn't detect or preview feeds and it doesn't let you subscribe to feeds using your favorite feed reader. Most of these features are available in Firefox, Opera, Safari, Internet Explorer, but they're implemented in Chrome using an extension. Chrome's RSS subscription extension was supposed to be bundled with the browser, but it was no longer included because not many people subscribe to feeds and the orange icon would've been distracting. A Google Chrome engineer offered a more detailed explanation: "We originally intended to include RSS support by default as a native feature of Google Chrome (and we still might in the future) but we decided instead to implement this as an extension. This decision was made based on our philosophy of trying to limit ourselves to adding only the UI features that a vast majority of users need and allow each user to customize the browsers to fit their needs with Extensions. Given that most people are not familiar with and don't consume RSS feeds, we thought that RSS support would be a better fit as an extension, at least to begin with." Here's what you see when you click on a link to the Slashdot feed: ![]() ... and here's the same feed if you use the RSS subscription extension: ![]() Maybe not all users know the definition of a feed, but not many people know what a browser is and that doesn't stop them from using a browser. Orange icons for feeds are everywhere and many sites display them prominently. It's strange to see that Google Chrome doesn't have native support for feeds, while Google Reader is the most popular online feed reader, Google's FeedBurner is the most popular service for managing feeds, most Google search services have feeds for search results and even Chrome's blog links to an Atom feed. What's even more surprising is that Chrome doesn't parse XML feeds to show a human-readable preview. Google Chrome doesn't even recommend users to install the RSS subscription extension. If you'd like to see native support for feeds in Google Chrome, star this issue. |
Synchronize Google Chrome Extensions Posted: 17 Jun 2010 02:05 PM PDT After adding support for synchronizing bookmarks, preferences and themes, Google Chrome tests a new option that synchronizes extensions and their settings. The feature is available in the most recent Dev Channel build, but you need to add two flags that enable this feature: --enable-sync-extensions --sync-url=https://clients4.google.com/chrome-sync/dev For example, in Windows you need to edit a Chrome shortcut: right-click on the shortcut, click on "Properties" and append a space followed by the flags above to the target field. I tried this feature using the latest Dev Channel build for Windows and a recent Chromium build. Most changes are synchronized almost instantly, but not everything is synchronized: Greasemonkey scripts are ignored and uninstalling extensions doesn't propagate to other clients. It's important to keep in mind that this is an initial implementation of the feature and that Chrome Dev Channel releases are buggier and less reliable than the stable releases. ![]() Chrome Dev Channel and Chromium, using the same extensions |

JavaScript modules in a JAR file - finally! Posted: 17 Jun 2010 11:45 PM PDT I don’t know why nobody announced this yet, a very important change landed on mozilla-central a few days ago. JavaScript modules can now be located in JAR files and loaded directly via chrome:// URLs. So an extension can now keep its modules in the JAR file along with all the other code. This has several advantages: more efficient compression, fewer files to sign if the extension is signed, fewer files to read in when Firefox starts up. And you no longer need to register resource:// “domains” for your extension (this makes the extension detectable from the web, something that isn’t always desirable). Even though it will take a year or two until I can fully benefit from this change in Adblock Plus — it is really good that this finally happened. Many thanks to Michael Wu! |

Switch to HD When Playing YouTube Videos in Full Screen Posted: 18 Jun 2010 01:00 AM PDT YouTube added a clever option for those who want to see a better video quality in full screen. If a video is available in a HD format, you can view it in HD when switching to the full screen mode. Just click on the drop-down menu for switching between formats, click on "Settings" and enable "Always play HD when switching to fullscreen (when available)". You can also change playback quality settings from this page. ![]() ![]() Unfortunately, when you exit the full screen mode, YouTube doesn't switch to the previous format. As YouTube's help center explains, "if you play HD video in a small player, the computer works overtime to scale down the video to fit within the player, which may result in choppy playback. It's always best to play the video size that best fits the size of the video player." { Thanks, Sterling. } |

Use Google Services from the Command Line Posted: 18 Jun 2010 12:02 PM PDT Not every one likes beautiful interfaces with big buttons, controls for entering text and uploading files. Sometimes it's faster to type commands in a terminal. GoogleCL is a project that makes it easy to use Google services like Blogger, Picasa Web, YouTube, Google Docs ans Google Calendar from the command-line. It's a wrapper for the Google Data APIs, so you first need to install Python 2.6 (or 2.5) and Google Data APIs Python Client Library. It's not very difficult to install a Python package. For example, in Windows you need to extract the archive, open the folder in Windows Explorer, shift + right-click in a blank space, select "Open command window here" and type: python setup.py install. After installing Python, Google Data APIs Python Client Library and Google CL, you can type commands that let you upload photos to Picasa Web, upload videos to YouTube, publish Blogger posts, add events to Google Calendar, find Gmail contacts and more. Here are some of my favorite commands: google calendar add "Meet Mary tomorrow at 10am" (add an event to Google Calendar) google picasa get "Album Title" c:\files\picasa\ (download the files from one of your albums) google picasa create --title "Miami Beach" c:\files\photos\miami\*.jpg (upload photos to a new Picasa Web album) google youtube post --title "Summer in Rome" c:\videos\rome.avi (upload a video to YouTube) google docs get --title "Reports .*" (download documents that have titles starting with "Reports" as text files) google docs upload c:\files\*.doc (upload the *.doc files from a folder to Google Docs) For a more comprehensive list of commands, type google --help or read the manual. ![]() { via Google Open Source Blog } |

We wouldn’t be here without the support of our customers, employees (past and present!), and everyone in-between. So thank you! |
