WebM, an Open Video Format for the Web Posted: 19 May 2010 08:45 AM PDT Google is about to launch WebM, an open video format that will use VP8, the flagship video codec of On2. As you probably remember, On2 has been recently acquired by Google.
"The WebM project is dedicated to developing a high-quality, open video format for the web that is freely available to everyone. The WebM launch is supported by Mozilla, Opera, Google and more than forty other publishers, software and hardware vendors." "WebM is an open, royalty-free media file format designed for the web. WebM files consist of video streams compressed with the VP8 video codec and audio streams compressed with the Vorbis audio codec. The WebM file structure is based on the Matroska media container," explains Google. WebM's site says that the new codec will be supported in Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera and you'll be able to play YouTube videos by enabling YouTube's HTML5 experiment. Google is expected to launch WebM at the Google I/O event, which is about to start in a few minutes (9:00am PDT). Don't miss the opening keynote, which is streamed live on YouTube. { via CNet } |

Posted: 19 May 2010 08:25 AM PDT I've been a user of Partychat for a few years now, both in its previous hosted-on-a-server-in-someone's-living-room implementation and in its current App Engine-based one. Needing a fun side project (and having a few itches that I needed scratches), I've spent quite a few evenings over the past month making changes to the source code. So far I've managed to: ![]()
Like with all fun side-projects projects, they can also turn not fun once usage picks up. For example, yesterday a user invited room A as a member of room B, and vice-versa. As an unintentional side-effect of a change that I made to make the setup process more user-friendly, it became very easy to set off an infinite loop of messages. By the time I realized what was going on, we'd run out of App Engine bandwidth quota. Thankfully after some budget rejiggering and a some quick code change all was well. Similarly, a couple of weeks ago we had CPU usage issues (though optimizing that away was still fun). It seems like chat is gaining in trendyness, with HipChat launching recently (presumably to challenge the incumbent Campfire) and Brizzly/Thing Labs's Picnics happening. Partychat will probably remain a hobby/fit-within-AppEngine-free-quota sort of project indefinitely, but it's been fun polishing it (and of coure, there's still quite a few things left to fix). And of course, if you need |

Posted: 18 May 2010 03:17 PM PDT I'm posting this from Moscone West, the site of Google I/O 2010. Some things that it may be useful to know:
![]() Things have already started; above is our own Roman Nurik giving the first Android session at the pre-IO Bootcamp. ![]() Above are the signs over the Android part of the main gathering area. There are many tantalizing display cases and tabletops; gleaming and empty now, but not for long. Meta-BloggingThursday is the big Android day at Google I/O. There will be announcements. We're going to try to use this blog to deliver more depth and perspective than you can expect from an executive on a stage in a keynote. So we've lined up a whole lot of blog posts; more than any human could be expected to read in a day. The plan is to have a couple of posts on Thursday summarizing and highlighting what we think are probably the big-news stories. Then we'll have more detailed technical pieces every other day or so for the next couple of weeks, filling in the details behind the announcements. It's heart-warming how eager the engineers are to tell the world about what they've been building, and it makes me happy to facilitate the process. There are other Google blogs that are going to be working hard too, telling the other stories coming out of this gathering. We'll post some links to things that seem particularly newsworthy, either to the world in general or to the Android comunity in particular. Stay tuned! |

More Google Chrome OS Screenshots Posted: 19 May 2010 04:03 AM PDT Google posted more images that show the user interface of Google Chrome OS. The interface is still under development, so it may change until the first stable version is released, later this year.
Chrome OS uses an interesting visualization for tab overview. "The overview is available via either gesture and hotkey. It provides a visual way of switching between windows and tabs. Windows are exploded into the tabs they contain, and all tabs/windows are visible in a single 2.5d space. This model is largely based on Peter Jin Hong & Elin Pedersen's G.L.I.D.E. Tab Navigation. We present tabs in a venetian blind arrangement, ensuring visibility of the top left of every page, and using perspective to compress the most useful portions of the page into the available strips. Favicons are presented as an alternative visual aid." ![]() ![]() Google also posted some screenshots of the open/save dialogs and the download shelf panel. "The shelf is an on demand target for downloading and uploading. It acts as a temporary resting place for files that have been accessed, and for content being uploaded to websites." Even if the Chrome OS only lets you use a browser, you can still download files and open them using Chrome's multimedia libraries or using web applications like Google Docs. ![]() ![]() A notification panel will be used for OS and website notifications, so web applications will be able to add their own alerts. ![]() Chrome OS will also include simple applications like a calculator: ![]() { via TechCrunch } |
