10 Under-Appreciated Sci-Fi Movies

Posted: 20 Jul 2010 06:50 PM PDT

Written by jeremyz

Sci-fi is a genre that you either love or hate, and since it’s a niche market movie studios often release sci-fi films with less fanfare than they deserve. Even if you’re a sci-fi fan, it can be easy to miss some solid films in the category. To right this wrong, here’s a list of great sci-fi flicks that you might have missed. Of course, if we missed any, please let us know in the comments!

10. Equilibrium

(2002)

Christian Bale stars in this sci-fi action flick about a future where all forms of emotion have been outlawed. There are a couple points where some of the supporting cast seems to forget that they’re not supposed to feel, but even so Equilibrium has some great ideas and cool scenes. It’s best known for its “gun-kata,” a martial art based entirely on the science of gunfights.

9. eXistenZ

(1999)

A creepy, gloppy film from David Cronenberg about the testing of a new virtual reality game, eXistenZ is certainly not a film for everyone. It’s twisty and filled with lots of shifts between different planes of reality and has several moments of Cronenberg’s trademark “body horror,” including a pretty disturbing biological gun. But there’s an even bigger reason many people haven’t seen it. It was released less than one month after another virtual reality movie you may have heard of: The Matrix.

8. Sunshine

(2007)

Sunshine isn’t a perfect film, but it’s got some great ideas and an interesting visual style that make it worth checking out. On a voyage into space to reignite the dying Sun, a team of scientists encounter disaster that could spell death for them and, in turn, the rest of humanity. You’ll never think about sunlight the same way again.

7. Pitch Black

(2000)

Forget the junky sequel The Chronicles of Riddick. Pitch Black transcends its Aliens rip-off roots, thanks to great characters, especially the magnetic murderer Riddick, played by Vin Diesel. He’s a bad guy who’s called up to protect a group of stranded space travelers from killer aliens, if only because they increase his own chances for survival. The spin-off video game is also great, but seriously, the sequel is crap.

6. The Hidden

(1987)

There’s an FBI agent on the trail of a brutal criminal, and each one has a secret: they’re both aliens in human bodies. The Hidden is a little dated by today’s standards, but it’s still got some great ideas and great performances, especially professional weirdo Kyle Maclachlan as the FBI agent/intergalactic hunter.

5. A Boy and his Dog

(1975)

Based on a novella by sci-fi master Harlan Ellison, A Boy and his Dog stars Don Johnson as a kid in a post-apocalyptic world who has a telepathic link with his dog. Together they stumble into an underground society that has sexy and sinister ideas in mind for the Boy. Why aren’t you watching it right now?

4. Primer

(2004)

Created by a small team of filmmakers with a budget of around $7000, Primer is one of the most intelligent, mind-bending sci-fi movies in decades and one of the most complex time-travel films ever. Writer/director/producer Shane Carruth is a former mathematician and engineer, so to say that Primer is a thinking man’s sci-fi film is probably underselling it. It’s a tough film to follow, but you can’t have a list of vital sci-fi movies without Primer.

3. Moon

(2009)

A sad, smart film from David Bowie’s son Duncan Jones, Moon is a film that works entirely because of the performance of Sam Rockwell. As someone about to end a three-year stint working on the moon, the main character Sam discovers a secret that changes everything about his job and his life, but to say more would be to do a disservice to the movie.

2. Silent Running

(1972)

In the future, all of Earth’s plant life has died. The only remaining flora is stored in a fleet of greenhouse ships in space. But when protagonist Freeman Lowell is ordered to destroy the forests he’s so passionate about protecting, his disobedience puts him in direct conflict with the rest of his crew. Check it out and discover why it’s considered one of the all-time gems of the sci-fi genre.

1. Gattaca

(1997)

One of the most respected sci-fi films of the last couple decades, Gattaca paints an all-too believable portrait of a permanent underclass of humans based on their “inferior” genetic material. Faking genetic tests with borrowed DNA, protagonist Vincent is days away from his dream of traveling to space. But can he maintain his charade long enough to make it to the launch? Watch it and find out.

Apresentação Oficial TMN Samsung Galaxy S

Posted: 21 Jul 2010 03:15 AM PDT

A apresentação teve duas partes:

o “fabuloso” (sim, fiquei rendido) Samsung Galaxy S.

Digam lá se não tem bom aspecto?

(Ed.

Problemas no Optimus Boston

Grip of Death no Galaxy S

P2P Video Demo - AIR2.5 on Android from Mark Doherty on Vimeo.

BlindType no iPhone

Posted: 22 Jul 2010 03:15 AM PDT

Galaxy S rival à altura do iPhone

The 960 Grid System Made Easy

Posted: 12 Jul 2010 03:00 AM PDT

The 960 Grid System Made Easy

The first time I discovered the 960 Grid System, I was immediately excited about the possibilities of implementing complex layouts so easily.

However, since I was fairly new to web design at the time, when I downloaded the files, I quickly became overwhelmed at how complicated the whole thing seemed.

With all this code, how could this be the easy way to create a layout?

This article is for web designers and front-end web developers who are interested in grid-based layout systems but are at a loss on how to decipher them.

We’ll focus specifically on the 960 Grid System, but after reading this guide, you’ll find that most of the other grid systems out there are similar and will make much more sense after you understand a few basic principles.

Grid-Based Design

Before we get into the specifics of the 960 Grid System, let’s briefly discuss grid-based design in general. The idea is certainly not something that originated on the Web. In fact, it stems from one of the oldest and most basic design principles: alignment.

Our brains like to simplify things to make them readily understandable. This is why we try to impose order on things that seem chaotic, like seeing a face in the craters on the moon.

Naturally, the easier it is to impose order, the quicker our brains can identify a pattern and move on. Grids are so organized and orderly that they require almost no interpretation our part.

Consider the two page layouts represented in the image below.

screenshot

Though both of these images are simply a gathering of rectangles, the layout at the top seems fundamentally better than the one on the bottom. We can instantly recognize a pattern, accept it, and move on.

The image on the bottom, however, is visually unsettling by comparison. There’s no clear pattern, order, or goal–it’s just looks like a random assortment of shapes.

Our eyes have a tendency to frantically search for fractions of a second while we attempt to identify a trend, which increases the time necessary to take in the scene as a whole.

It’s interesting to note that random can still be beautiful. Random definitely has its place in nature, art, and even design, but it’s no way to logically organize information.

The point is that grids are among the simplest and strongest ways to create order on a page. They may seem cold and rigid, but remember that they are both extremely efficient and effective, and can even be quite flexible if you don’t let your imagination get bogged down by the necessary structure.

Why Do I Need a Grid System?

The 960 Grid System–and other tools and systems like it–provide a fast and easy way to create grid-based layouts using CSS. They do this by providing cross-browser-tested and optimized preset column widths for you to set your content into.

Before CSS3, it wasn’t exactly easy to break up a page into columns without getting into tedious math.

For instance, if you have a 1,000-pixel wide container and you want to split it up into three columns, that’s 333 and 1/3 pixel per column (not exactly a nice whole number). Further, columns broken up like this would crash into each other, so a margin must be added on each side. If we add a 10-pixel margin to each side of every column, we must also subtract that 20 pixels from the width of each column. This gives us 3 columns roughly 313 pixels wide each with a margin of 10 pixels on each side (even then you’re at 999px and not 1,000px).

Want 4 columns in a row below that? Then you have to start the process over and subtract 80px of margin from 1,000px for a total of 920px and divide that by 4 to get a column width of 230px.

Finally, if you want to add a sidebar that’s a third of the total width of the page, you have to create a column that’s 750px for the content and one that is 250px for the sidebar, then subtract 40px of margin to get one 730px column and one 230px column.

Confused yet?

Other web designers were too. It’s not exactly rocket science, but it’s also not something you want to go through again and again for each project that you create.

The solution? Find someone else to figure out all these crazy column widths, throw them into a CSS document, and let you download it free. (That person happens to be Nathan Smith, creator of the 960 Grid System).

The 960 Grid System

screenshot

The 960 Grid System is simply a way to lay out websites using a grid that is 960 pixels wide.

The reason it’s 960 pixels wide is because the number 960 makes for a lot of clean divisions utilizing whole numbers when factoring in column widths and margins. And it fits nicely on the majority of screens.

The 960 GS comes in two primary variants: a 12-column grid and a 16-column grid (a 24-column version is included as well for those that really need extra control).

In the 12-column version, the narrowest column is 60 pixels wide. Each column after that increases by 80 pixels.

So the available column widths are: 60, 140, 220, 300, 380, 460, 540, 620, 700, 780, 860 and 940.

screenshot

Similarly, in the 16-column version, the narrowest column is 40 pixels wide and each column after that increases by 60 pixels.

So the available column widths are: 40, 100, 160, 220, 280, 340, 400, 460, 520, 580, 640, 700, 760, 820, 880 and 940.

screenshot

CSS Classes Now in Session

When you look at the diagrams above, consider each of the dark blue horizontal bars as a CSS class in the 960 Grid System.

To create an object in your layout that is the width of one of those bars, you simply assign the proper class to your div–that’s it!

The classes are conveniently named according to their size with the grid_1 CSS class being the narrowest and grid_12 CSS class being the widest (grid_16 is the widest in the 16-column version).

So to reuse our image from above, take a look at the available columns now, but this time, think about them using their respective CSS classes instead of pixel widths.

screenshot

This naming system makes it incredibly easy to hash out complicated layouts in seconds flat. To fill a page’s width, the trick to keep in mind is that the numbers assigned to your selected classes must equal 12 in the 12-column version and 16 in the 16-column version.

For instance, using the 12-column version, if you have 3 divs of text that you want to be displayed side-by-side in a 3-column layout, simply assign the grid_4 class to each one to total 12 (4+4+4=12).

screenshot

Similarly, assigning the grid_4 CSS class in the 16-column version makes it easy to create a 4-column layout (4+4+4+4=16).

screenshot

To make sure you’re referring to the proper classes, be sure to place your 12-column elements inside a div with the class container_12 and your 16-column classes inside a div with the class called container_16.

If you’ve never worked with the 96 GS before, I hope you’re having your "aha" moment right now regarding just how easy it is to spec out a layout in no time at all using this system.

Push Me, Pull Me

The 960 Grid System allows you to reposition elements independently by pushing or pulling them horizontally along the page. This is accomplished by using the push and pull CSS classes.

For instance, consider the two examples in the image below. The first example is a basic 4-column layout using only the grid_3 class.

However, in the second version, I’ve pushed the first column and pulled the last column, resulting in their positions jumping over one column from where they would normally lie in the layout.

screenshot

Keep in mind that you can push items as far as you want. If I had wanted to push an element two columns over, I would’ve implemented the class push_2, and so on.

The push/pull system has major implications for how you lay out a page in your HTML document.

For instance, in the example below, imagine the website’s name is typed out in a logo and placed as the first element on the page.

As the most important element on the page, you’d like to keep the logo as the first item in your HTML markup, but visually, you actually want it to appear in the center of the page.

Before pushing/pulling:

screenshot

To visually position the logo element in between the two text columns, you would use the following HTML:

 <div class="grid_6 push_3"> <p>logo</p> </div> <div class="grid_3 pull_6"> <p>text column</p> </div> <div class="grid_3"> <p>text column</p> </div> <div class="grid_12"> <p>big box</p> </div>

This results in the layout shown in the image below.

After pushing/pulling:

Despite the fact that the logo comes first in our markup, it will be visually positioned in the center of our page.

Wide Open Spaces

You’ll often find that you want to create empty space in a layout (negative space is a good design device). To accomplish this, apply the prefix and suffix classes to your divs. These are implemented very similar to the push and pull classes.

For instance, to leave a blank space that is the width of one column before an element, use prefix_1 class, or after an element using suffix_1 class.

screenshot

As you can see, the example above uses a suffix_3 class to create an empty space the width of three columns after it.

The Beginning and The End

The final bit of knowledge you’ll need to know is that you are provided with the alpha ("first") and omega ("last") classes that must be applied to any grid units that are the children of other grids.

Obviously, the alpha class will be applied to the first child and the omega class to the last child.

Essentially, these classes provide a margin fix so that you can nest grid units inside of other grid units.

Let’s Review

Armed with this newfound knowledge, you should now be a 960 Grid System expert.

To review, there are basically only 5 concepts you need to remember:

  1. Use the container_12 class for the 12-column version and the container_16 for the 16-column version.
  2. Use the classes grid_1, grid_2, grid_3, etc. to set your column widths. If you want to fill a page horizontally, make sure the numbers add up to 12 or 16 (i.e. grid_4 + grid_2 + grid_6 = 12).
  3. Use the push and pull classes to independently position items on the page, regardless of their position in your page’s markup.
  4. Use the prefix and suffix classes to create empty spaces in your layout.
  5. Use the alpha and omega to fix the margins for any nested grid units.

There is also a CSS reset included with the 960 Grid System. This is a completely optional file based on the ever popular Eric Meyer CSS reset. If you like it, keep it. If not, trash it!

960 Grid System Resources

Now that you’re an expert on grid-basedd web esign and the 960 Grid System, here are a few tools and resources to check out to further your understanding.

Fluid 960 Grid System

An awesome fluid version of 960 GS! Fluid web layouts readjust the layout to fit the page. This can make for some really complicated code, but using this system means that it will do all the heavy lifting for you.

Grid-Based Design Gallery

If you’re skeptical about the 960 Grid System and what grid-based design can offer you as a web designer, check out this design gallery. As you can see, with a little imagination and ingenuity, the possibilities are endless.

Typogridphy

From the site: "Typogridphy is a CSS framework constructed to allow web designers and front-end developers to quickly code typograhically pleasing grid layouts.”

Off the Grid

Admittedly, even with all the possibilities and flexibility provided by a grid system like 960 GS, you’re still being placed under restrictive confines. No one is suggesting that all websites should be created on a grid–this would definitely lead to a widespread lack of creativity and lack of variation in page layouts.

Further, as you experiment with 960 GS, you’ll find that there are numerous ways to break the layout that will force you to rethink your designs.

The 960 Grid System–and others like it–merely provide a strong foundation for the numerous times you’ll find yourself building a site that doesn’t break the mold with innovation, but instead needs to convey information clearly and logically in a way that is familiar to a large number of users.

Your Thoughts on Grid Systems?

Leave a comment below and let us know what grid system you prefer and if the information above helped you in your quest to decipher the 960 Grid System. What’s good about grid systems? What’s bad about them? Share your thoughts an opinions below.

AppInventor - Create your Own Android Apps

Posted: 16 Jul 2010 02:07 AM PDT

Have an ideia for a "killer" Android App but have no knowledge in programming languages? Well, have no fear, AppInventor is here!

Suited for younger people and/or anyone else without the time (or patience) to learn a "traditional" computer programming language, AppInventor allows you to create your own Apps in a much simpler and faster way (you might notice its MIT's Scratch origin.)

Don't be fooled by it's simplicity. There is virtually no limits to what you can do with it. Some people created Apps that automatically respond to SMS while they're driving; or Apps that automatically call for help if they detect someone falling down (using the accelerometers) and not getting back up within a specified time limit.
So... it's really up to you to have that amazing idea you want to try out in your Android.

So, no more excuses not to have you own App adding up to surpass the 100,000 Android Apps in the Market!

When Designing Products for System Administrators

Posted: 22 Jul 2010 01:09 PM PDT

System administrators are a usually very grumpy lot. In the 22 years of being a system administrator of some sort or another, it has been a rare job where I have not been split between 4 tasks, 3 managers, and multiple goals. Most of the people I have known have rarely become system administrators by choice but have been thrust into it by some outside influence (oh the printer works when you jiggle it.. your now the sysadmin.) Usually time for training or learning new things is non-existant... managers (even those who were once techies) seem to have an idea that a System Administrator just needs to see a new box and will know everything about it like some evil wizard from old. It is a myth that many of us System Administrators or Bastard Operators try to keep up in some form because a) we either don't feel confident enough already but are good at faking it, or b) we already overworked and need as much alone time as possible to keep what hardware we have running.
These are things that I have found most developers of system administration tools and configurations don't get. Looking at some of the insane configuration tools from AIX SMIT to HPUX SAM, we end up with configuation tools that you require about 6 months of deep training to be able to get it to boot and stay up reasonably well. Yes it does inspire a certain kind of brand loyalty.. a sort of passive aggressive one that is also something BOFH's and SA's are known for. For my part I try to evaluate any tool or product by what I call the 2am pager incident:

Take a product and get it running. Then spend 24-48 hours awake working on some other hot project that has to be done by X. After you finally get to sleep, set up the pager to wake you at 2am. If you can rebuild, configure and get the product working by 6am it can be used in production. If it can't be it is too complex or unreliable to be useful in any server environment. I came up with this test after having this happen multiple times at both my first consulting job and then my first job at a startup. I would never deal with Digital OSF or HPUX again because of this complexity, but found Solaris 2.4 and Red Hat Linux 3 to be perfectly workable (AIX was just fun to have smitty run and fall over.. at 6 am its always funny).

The second test is to get the new administrator to get it working. Always give them a 24-48 hour deadline and then 'break' it just after it has been put up. If the new administrator can fix the system without having to call technical support its a good sign. On the other hand if the sysadmin quits or sets the box on fire... its probably not something you want in production.

While I have been using these tests for 10+ years now to good results, I have found that most senior sysadmins have similar rules (though the can you configure it after a quart of jagermeister is just too extreme for me). In the end they come down to the following:

  1. Assume that your customer is under-trained, tired, but does not want too much to get in their way of finding and fixing a problem. Clippy should only be there if you can set him on fire at 6am.
  2. Put configuration files in obvious places. Putting some configuration files in /etc and others in /var/lib/moo and some elsewhere is definitely a killer."
  3. Document what flags do. No one wants to find out right before the presentation that '--clean' cleans up bad data but '--clean --clean' reformats the whole Database.
  4. Make sure that commands are simple, easy to remember and
  5. "Everyone knows that debugging is twice as hard as writing a program in the first place. So if you're as clever as you can be when you write it, how will you ever debug it?" - Brian W. Kernighan and P.J. Plauger, The Elements of Programming Style, Second Edition
  6. "Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction." -- Albert Einstein
  7.  "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler." -- [possibly] Albert Einstein
So when creating things for an enterprise, cloud, cluster, or small business system... please try to remember that the person who is either going praise you OR send fecal matter in the mail to you is going to be tired, irritable, and overworked when the problem occurs. [Not that I think that fecal matter should be sent to developers.. I have just seen it happen before]

Tomadas Controladas por USB

Posted: 15 Jul 2010 03:38 AM PDT

Apple to offer Free iPhone 4 Bumpers for All

Posted: 16 Jul 2010 11:21 PM PDT

Due to public pressure regarding the iPhone 4 "death-grip" antenna issues, Apple has folded and announced they'll offer free iPhone 4 cases to everyone.

If you had already paid for a bumper, you'll get a full refund. And, as they say they can't make enough Bumpers for all, they'll also offer 3rd party cases for you to choose.

Personally, I find this all deal... surreal!

There's a lot of thing Apple is/should be criticized about... but this all "antenna issue"... I can't agree with it.

Ever since I heard the first antenna issues I was kind of puzzled; what's new with the signal strength being affected by the way you hold your phone?

I even went as far as recording a video showing the exact same effect in the device I had at hand at the moment: an HTC Desire.
It's plain physics... you place an obstacle between a transmitter and a receiver... and the signal drops. Physics 101.
Ok, so the iPhone 4 suffers more if you carefully place your hand in such a way that reduces its antenna performance even further... big deal!

The thing is... people forget that with those same external antennas, the iPhone 4 can now make calls in places any previous iPhone couldn't! Why doesn't that get the same "press"?

In fact... if this is indeed such a *big* problem, why are there only 1.7% of people returning their iPhone 4s? (less than the previous models.)

It's kind of sad, when 1% of complaints on the internet cause such major fuss worlwide... to the point of making anyone tired of trying to explain why/how/what is really happening.
(Some have already admitted they contributed to this whole "out of proportion" issue.)

Even Apple itself was forced to create a smartphone antenna performance page... where you can see the exact same effect in other devices (HTC, Samsung, Blackberry)... devices that never received any flak about this issue.

... oh well.

P.S. If you're still reading this, and all you can think is... when I can i get my white iPhone 4... looks like they're due to arrive at end of the month - in limited quantities, be warned..

Google Nexus One retrospective

Posted: 24 Jul 2010 04:13 AM PDT

Google Nexus One

Call the Nexus One what you want -- failed experiment, iClone, ahead of its time, whatever. We'll call it a solid phone, born from Google's desire to "shake up" the smartphone market, both in terms of available hardware and the way it was sold to consumers. Some of it worked. Some of it didn't.

We're not going to recap the life of every Android smartphone when it gets replaced. That would be silly. But the Nexus One was Google's earnest attempt to change things, and it deserves a final send-off, which is marginally less silly. And so, after the break, a Nexus One retrospective.

Nexus One: Born, Jan. 5, 2010

OK, that's not quite true. While Google announced the Nexus One at a special press event in San Francisco in early January 2010, it actually had given the phone to employees about a month earlier, with a nod and a wink that they weren't really supposed to brag about it in public. You know how that goes, of course.

So what was Google keeping semi-secret? Oh, just the first smartphone (manufactured by HTC) with a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen, the first in the U.S. with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and the first with Android 2.1. Also on the hardware end was plugless charging via a trio of contacts on the bottom bezel of the phone. The old trackball remained, to the delight of some, and the disdain of others. A car dock and desktop dock leaked out, and eventually were sold to consumers.

Nexus One Headlines
The Nexus One's birth made front-page news. It's death? Not so much.

Some minor hardware niggles arose, mainly surrounding the touchscreen. AMOLED's not great outdoors, because you can't see the screen due to reflectivity. Also, there are issues with the N1's touchscreen itself, in that its multitouch implementation could be a little inaccurate. Not deal-breakers for most people, but headaches, for sure. Software-wise, a lack of multitouch at launch was a point of frustration, as was a problem keeping a connection to T-Mobile's 3G network.

So that's the phone, more or less, in a few brief sentences. A predictable improvement for the time, and not necessarily innovative, though it was a decent step up from most Android smartphones that were available at the time (the one exception being the Motorola Droid, we'd argue).

The Google phone web store

Nexus One web store

The part that Google really tried to shake up was in the way the phone was sold. With the launch of the Nexus One came the Google phone web store, at Google.com/phone. It was (in the United States, anyway), the only place you could purchase the Nexus One. There were a couple of options at first: an unlocked, unsubsidized GSM Nexus One that worked on T-Mobile's 3G and EDGE networks, or AT&T's EDGE network. A Verizon version was promised at launch, months later, was declared dead. In March, a proper AT&T (and Rogers) 3G version of the Nexus One was released by Google. That same day, Sprint said it, too, would get a Nexus One. That never happened.

The web store model was plagued by some major issues, all of which compounded each other. Consider:

  • No try before you buy: You couldn't actually try the phone before buying it. Was it too small? Too big? How was the keyboard? No way to tell before plunking down your money.
  • Lack of marketing: If a phone's not actually going to be available in a store, you're going to drum up some marketing power. And aside from an initial media push after its announcement, Google didn't do too much to actively press the Nexus One. There was a one-line mention on the Google.com home page (and that's no small thing for Google to have done), as well as AdSense ads. But there was zilch in the way of traditional mainstream marketing. No magazine ads. No newspaper ads. No television spots.
  • Who's running this place? At first, there was mass confusion over who was in charge/responsible for customer service. Google threw its hands up and pointed at T-Mobile and HTC as if to say "Hey, we just sell the things." Google finally took charge, its help forums flourished and a customer service phone number was set up. Better late than never, but much damage was done.
  • Confusing pricing/upgrade process: It's bad enough that we're traditionally stuck with subsidized pricing in the United States. It didn't help any that the process for qualifying for a T-Mobile subsidy was flubbed, which ultimately led to a price drop and refunds.

In May 2010, Google announced that its phone web store wasn't working out, and it was ending the strategy. VP of product management Mario Queiroz explained at Google's IO developers conference:

"The web store was another element of the strategy. It was, in many ways, an experiment for us. ... Android was in a very different place six months ago. ... And today, we believe that the right thing to do from a distribution perspective is different from what it was a few months ago. And so we've chosen to double down on our partnerships."

On July 21, 2010, Google ceased selling the Nexus One online.

Long live the Nexus One

Failed distribution strategy aside, the Nexus One is, was and (likely) will be a solid phone for a while longer. Let's remember some of the positives:

The beginning of Android's 1GHz era

CPU speed isn't everything, but it's not nothing, either. The Nexus One was the first Android smartphone in the United States to sport the higher speeds. Not that the Android smartphone market wasn't headed in that direction, but it's a spec worth touting.

Plugless charging and Bluetooth sync

Nexus One charging

It's a shame this one hasn't really caught on anywhere else. The two docks officially released by Google take advantage of three little gold-colored contacts on the bottom bezel of the phone to make a charging connection, meaning you don't actually plug anything into the phone to charge it. In the case of the desktop dock, that means very quick access to your phone. No messing about with plugs.

In addition, the docks took advantage of the Nexus One's Bluetooth capability, meaning you could plug speakers into the desktop dock, and use the car dock to stream music of phone calls.

Trackball notifications

Nexus _one trackball

The trackball isn't the most elegant of features you'll ever see on a smartphone. But it served its purpose, and then some. It allowed you to make acute adjustments of cursor location, or scroll through icons instead of touching the screen. But where it really shined (literally) was in its implementation of color notifications. Not officially supported until Android 2.2 was released (it was in custom ROMs earlier), the trackball will blink in different colors for different notifications. As we're not expecting any more trackballs anytime soon, we'll have to let this one live in memorium.

The (admittedly failed) web store model

OK, so it didn't work. But some of us equate the cell phone store experience with that of buying a car. It's not anywhere near a fair comparison, and we still recommend you try a phone before you buy it. But for us crazy die-hard smartphone nerds who are going to buy a phone anyway, it was a nice no-hassle method of purchasing a phone and having it here the next day.

A hacker's dream

Nexus One bootloader unlock

The Nexus One from its inception was Google's next-generation developers' phone. Like the HTC Ion before it, it was designed to let you do pretty much whatever you wanted to it. A simple "fastboot OEM unlock" command opened up the bootloader so that you could load custom ROMs. No impossible security, no fears that a Google gestapo would hunt you down, just a warning that you'd be voiding your warranty.

And from there, you open a whole new world of custom ROMs. It was on the Nexus One that we got our first taste of the all new Sense UI, ported over from the European HTC Desire. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. If you can do it, you can do it on a Nexus One.

Farewell, old friend

And with that, we pay our respects to the Google Nexus One. Oh, it'll be around for a while still, living on in the hands of developers and the die-hard Android fans who bought one (or more than one) in the first place. But it's a great phone that was taken before its time.

As for the store? Eh, it was an interesting idea, but poorly implemented, and likely doomed anyway, giving the nature of the way people prefer to purchase phones -- subsidized and in person.

Fair thee well, Nexus One. Fair thee well.

Play Snake in YouTube's Player

Posted: 24 Jul 2010 02:08 PM PDT

YouTube's player has a clever Easter egg: make sure the player has focus, press the left arrow on your keyboard for about 2 seconds and you can play Snake while watching the video.

This trick only works in YouTube's new player, which is only available for videos that don't include annotations or ads. It's limited to the videos played on YouTube's site and it doesn't work for embedded videos. Here's an example of video you can use to play Snake.

YouTube is not the only Google product that lets you play games. Gmail has a Labs feature called "old Snakey" that adds a Snake game inside Gmail.

Why I had to ban China - fighting spam

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 04:54 AM PDT

I want to start with an apology to the few Chinese who are using this website for legitimate purposes — next time they try to post on the forum or comment on my blog they will most likely see an error page. Which is really a pity and I feel bad about that. But I cannot really see another way.

Most people probably know already, spam on the web isn’t limited to e-mail. Spammers discovered forums and blogs as a new platform for spam and are increasingly targeting them. And the more popular a website is (in terms of Google rank), the more spam it will get.

One has to realize that this is no longer about spam bots — these can be kept out with relatively simple technological solutions. Unfortunately, there is a tendency to hire people for “data entry jobs”, particularly in countries like China or India. These people will send spam posts to forums and blogs all day as their job and solutions targeted at defense against bots will help very little. And they will try to disguise their posts as real questions as much as possible, sometimes even resulting in other people wasting time on trying to help them.

For a long time the solution was to have moderators remove spam in forums, I would then occasionally ban IP ranges to keep out persistent spammers. My blog was generally less targeted and I could clean out the spam myself. Unfortunately, the amount of spam has been building up over time (probably also because of this site becoming more popular). And now it got so bad that I had to keep fighting spam while on vacation — spam comments on my blog almost daily, often with many different blog posts spammed. Similar picture in the forum where some spammers spend hours (not an overstatement) to spam dozens of topics.

With the bulk of spam coming from China I saw no other way but to ban Chinese IP addresses altogether — these users will still be able to read or download everything but posting to the forum or to this blog will no longer be allowed. As I said, this is not a decision I am happy with but it will hopefully make moderator’s life a lot easier. I checked the existing forum posts against the IP database and it should be very few users who will be affected by that measure.

Why don’t I have this much spare time?

Posted: 17 Jul 2010 10:25 AM PDT

Seems like I fill quite a few of these roles… so how come I don’t have all the spare time these guys do? Maybe I need to have a single role, so that instead of switching roles while one is “busy” I can have one role with blockers. Hmmmm….

Only one I’m missing from below is the 3D artist. But that’s ok. Cute comic though. =)

Inception

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 03:33 AM PDT

É impossível multiplicar riqueza dividindo-a." ( Adrian Rogers, 1931)

FM Radio Currently Running On Nexus One

Posted: 12 Jul 2010 02:36 PM PDT

This morning, member intersectRaven over at XDA posted his latest kernel [.35-rcX]intersectRaven’s Kernel (FM SUPPORT!!!). After testing on Desire ROM’s, I found that MoDaCo’s r19 ROM works! I plugged in the Nexus One stock headset and opened the FM Radio application and the app began turning on the FM radio and then started scanning for stations. This is an experimental kernel and as I’m writing this, I am listening to a local rock station here in Pensacola, FL. I can scan through various local stations and they are all coming in clear. Every now and then, the app will freeze and once I reboot my Nexus One, the FM radio will work again. Getting the FM radio to work on the Nexus One seemed almost impossible and although it is not stable at all, I do recommend you guys trying it. This is great progress on getting the FM Radio to work on the Nexus One. Keep up with intersectRaven’s progress to bring us a fully stable working kernel.

You can get intersectRaven’s latest kernel HERE and MoDaCo’s r19 ROM HERE.

*UPDATE*

  • 3 of 5 attempts each after reboot, the radio would turn on, but would be stuck at the “Scanning. Please wait…” prompt for several minutes with no progress and as I am very impatient, when I press the “back” key, I would be limited to what 87.5 MHz picks up. Unfortunately for me, it is the soft jam station with lots of static.

Froyo To Roll Out On 3 Devices Next Week!

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 06:15 PM PDT

It looks like Android 2.2 (Froyo) will be making its way to your devices very soon. Thanks to a Verizon tipster who claims that the Motorola Droid X, the HTC Droid Incredible, and the Motorola Droid will be receiving the Android 2.2 update at the same time. He also stated that this not a rumor, but confirmed. He said that HTC and Motorola will be release Android 2.2 simultaneously and will start pushing out the Android 2.2 update beginning August 6th, which is next Friday. It’s expected to hit all of these devices by August 15th. That’s great news and potentially adds substance to the rumor that the Motorola Droid 2 will ship with Android 2.2.

Keep your fingers crossed and an eye on your device.

With these devices receiving Android 2.2 very soon, now would be a good time to purchase any of these devices via the AndroidSPIN Cell Phone Store and receive the best prices around.

Google Charts Now Plot Functions

Posted: 13 Jul 2010 06:34 AM PDT

I didn’t get round to posting this at the time it was announced, but as I’ve got a few posts on a similar theme already (e.g. RESTful Image Generation – When Text Just Won’t Do) I think it’s worth a quick post for continuity, if nothing else: Google Charts support for TeX images and formula plotting (i.e. provide an equation and it will give you an image back of the formula plotted out); there’s also an interactive Google Charts Playground that I hadn’t seen before…

You can also add labels to images…

So for example, take this URL:

http://chart.apis.google.com/chart
?cht=lc
&chd=t:-1|15,45
&chs=250×150&chco=FF0000,000000
&chfd=0,x,0,11,0.1,sin(x)*50%2B50
&chxt=x,y
&chm=c,00A5C6,0,110,10|a,00A5C6,0,60,10

and it delivers this:

GOogle chart demo

The following is also plotted:

google chart formula plot

from this URL:

http://chart.apis.google.com/chart
?cht=lxy&chs=250×250&chd=t:0|0|0
&chxs=0,ff0000,12,0,lt|1,0000ff,10,1,lt
&chfd=0,x,0,360,1.9,sin(4*x)*40%2b50|1,y,0,360,1.9,cos(6*y)*40%2b50
&chf=c,lg,90,FFFF00,0,FF9933,1&chco=006699

On the TeX front, this URL:
http://chart.apis.google.com/chart
?cht=tx
&chl=x%20=%20%5Cfrac%7B-b%20%5Cpm%20%5Csqrt%20%7Bb%5E2-4ac%7D%7D%7B2a%7D

delivers:
google TeX chart demo

Getting the escaping can be a bit of a pain, but the interactive playground makes things slightly easier:

Google chart playground

(You still need to escape things like “+” signs, though…)

Workaround: Google Chrome – domain-blacklist for cookies

Posted: 14 Jul 2010 02:41 AM PDT

But for some reasons the cookie-management has only 3 modes, without the ability to define whitelists or blacklist with specific domains, probably the google-boys knows who would be blacklist-chartleader. However, for me this is a knock-out criterion and as I couldn’t find a better solution, here is a quick and dirty workaround for a domain-blacklist, at least it prevents persistent cookies for special domains while cookies are generally accepted.

The chrome-cookies are stored in a sqlite database file, the following script deletes all cookies from defined domains before starting chrome (sqlite3 package is required), furthermore the “local state” file will be deleted (contains some client information) and the UserAgent ID can be faked (eg Safari/WinXP, commented out) .

Maybe this script it’s useful to someone, just customize it to your needs and save it to /usr/bin

#!/bin/sh
#satelie...@gmx.de
#

CONFIG_DIR="$HOME/.config/google-chrome"
COOKIES_FILE="$CONFIG_DIR/Default/Cookies"
LOCAL_STATE_FILE="$CONFIG_DIR/Local State"

#delete cookies containing one of that strings in domain-name before starting chrome
COOKIES_BLACKLIST=(
'google'
'microsoft'
'bing.com'
'yahoo'
)

for (( i=0;i<${#COOKIES_BLACKLIST[@]};i++)); do
echo "delete from cookies where host_key like '%${COOKIES_BLACKLIST[${i}]}%';"
sqlite3 $COOKIES_FILE "delete from cookies where host_key like '%${COOKIES_BLACKLIST[${i}]}%';"
done

#set AGENT_ID to fake the user-agent identification
#AGENT_ID="Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en) AppleWebKit/522.11.3 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Safari/522.11.3"

#rubbish
rm "$LOCAL_STATE_FILE"

if [ -n "$AGENT_ID" ]; then
exec `google-chrome --user-agent="$AGENT_ID"`
else
exec google-chrome
fi
exit 0

HTC Desire and Nexus One to be fitted with SLCD displays, DROID Incredible sticks with AMOLED

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 02:42 PM PDT

HTC has officially announced their switch from AMOLED to SLCD displays for the Nexus One and HTC Desire. Low supplies of the Samsung sourced AMOLED display has led to manufacturing delays for several HTC handsets.

The new SLCD displays from SONY offer boarder viewing angles, improved battery performance and improved visibility in direct sunlight. The display switch for the two HTC phones is expected to happen later this summer.

Surprisingly, HTC’s press release made no mention of the HTC made DROID Incredible which is sold by Verizon. The DROID Incredible has been experiencing supply shortage issues since launch due to Samsung’s AMOLED screens. We reached out to out contacts at HTC and received the following reply:

“Because AMOLED supply is being relieved on other models, we currently feel we can meet demand of Droid Incredible with AMOLED screens. Of course we may need to change our minds and add sLCD screen models should demand continue to remain high.”HTC PR Rep

The AMOLED supply shift for the other two HTC phones to SLCD should be enough to accommodate the necessary displays needed to keeps the DROID Incredible stocked on store shelves. We’re not sure if HTC’s move to SONY’s SLCD displays is permanent, but we’re pretty confident that HTC will do whatever it takes to make sure customers can purchase whichever HTC phone they want.

HTC Introduces SLCD Display Technology To Its Portfolio

New Displays to be integrated into HTC Desire and Nexus One

Taoyuan, TAIWAN – July 26, 2010 – HTC Corporation, a global designer of smartphones, today introduced Super LCD display (SLCD) technology into a variety of HTC phones including the HTC Desire and global Nexus One later this summer. The SLCD display offers an exceptional natural balanced colour, clear contrast, broad viewing angles and improved power efficiency.

“HTC is experiencing high-demand for many of our phones, specifically our phones with 3.7 inch displays. The new SLCD display technology enables us to ramp up our production capabilities quickly to meet the high-demand,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. “The SLCD displays provide consumers with a comparable visual experience to HTC’s current 3.7 inch displays with some additional benefits including battery performance.”

SLCD is the latest generation of LCD technology that offers improved performance from earlier LCD panels including approximately five times better power management. SLCDs also offer an enhanced viewing experience with wider viewing angles that are enabled by Sony’s new VSPEC III™ technology.

Introducing Google Apps for Government

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 11:00 AM PDT

Today we’re excited to announce a new edition of Google Apps. Designed with guidance from customers like the federal government, the City of Los Angeles and the City of Orlando, Google Apps for Government includes the same great Google applications that people know and love, with specific measures to address the policy and security needs of the public sector.

We’re also pleased to announce that Google Apps is the first suite of cloud computing messaging and collaboration applications to receive Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) certification and accreditation from the U.S. General Services Administration. The FISMA law applies to all information systems in use by U.S. federal government agencies to help ensure they’re secure. The federal government’s General Services Administration has reviewed the documentation of our security controls and issued an authorization to operate, the official confirmation of our FISMA certification and accreditation. This review makes it easier for federal agencies to compare our security features to those of their existing systems; most agencies we have worked with have found that Google Apps provides at least equivalent, if not better, security than they have today. This means government customers can move to the cloud with confidence.

Take Berkeley Lab, a member of the national laboratory system supported by the U.S. Department of Energy. It’s managed by the University of California and conducts unclassified research across a wide range of scientific disciplines. Berkeley researchers collaborate with scientists around the world, so emailing version upon version of documents among collaborators and trying to juggle disparate files is difficult. Berkeley Lab researchers have been using Google Apps to share documents that live in the cloud, and can view and edit documents and spreadsheets simultaneously knowing they are always working from the latest information. (Read more from Berkeley Lab’s Chief Information Officer on the Enterprise blog.)

And we’re not stopping with FISMA certification. Google Apps for Government will continue to evolve to meet unique government requirements. Google Apps for Government stores Gmail and Calendar data in a segregated system located in the continental United States, exclusively for our government customers. Other applications will follow in the near future. The suite is a “community cloud”—as defined by the National Institute for Science and Technology—to support the needs of our government customers. Google Apps for Government is available now to any federal, state or local government in the United States.

With reviews of our security controls in place, government agencies can more easily take advantage of all the benefits of one of the world’s best cloud computing systems. Google’s cloud offers higher reliability, best-in-class disaster recovery and access to a steady stream of innovation—all of which can provide substantial improvements over existing systems in addition to significant cost savings. And with no hardware or software to install and maintain, Google Apps for Government allows agencies to redeploy resources to technology projects core to their mission of serving the public. This new edition should give governments an even stronger case for making the move to the cloud.

Update July 27: Clarified details regarding the source of our certification and accreditation.

Tablet Android "Low Cost"

Licensing Service Technology Highlights

Posted: 27 Jul 2010 02:00 PM PDT

We’ve just announced the introduction of a licensing server for Android Market. This should address one of the concerns we’ve heard repeatedly from the Android developer community.

The impact and intent, as outlined in the announcement, are straightforward. If you want to enable your app to use the licensing server, there’s no substitute for reading the authoritative documentation: Licensing Your Applications. Here are some technical highlights.

  • This capability has been in the Android Market client app since 1.5, so you don’t have to be running the latest Android flavor to use it.

  • It’s secure, based on a public/private key pair. Your requests to the server are signed with the public key and the responses from the server with the private key. There’s one key pair per publisher account.

  • Your app doesn’t talk directly to the licensing server; it IPCs to the Android Market client, which in turn takes care of talking to the server.

  • There’s a substantial tool-set that will ship with the SDK, the License Verification Library (LVL). It provides straightforward entry points for querying the server and handling results. Also, it includes modules that you can use to implement certain licensing policies that we expect to be popular.

  • LVL is provided in source form as an Android Library project. It also comes with a testing framework.

  • There’s a Web UI on the publisher-facing part of the Market’s Web site for key management; it includes setup for production and testing.

  • Obviously, you can’t call out to the server when the device is off-network. In this situation you have to decide what to do; one option is to cache licensing status, and LVL includes prebuilt modules to support that.

We think this is a major improvement over the copy-protection option we’ve offered up to this point, and look forward to feedback from developers.

How do users end up with a misconfigured certificate store?

Posted: 27 Jul 2010 06:18 AM PDT

I am out of ideas so maybe somebody knows more than me here. I noticed that some Adblock Plus users cannot download https://easylist.adblockplus.org/easylist.txt. Data from a different filter list which switched to HTTPS recently indicates that most of these clients cannot establish an HTTPS connection — most likely the certificate is rejected. I did a very rough estimate, we are talking about something like 0.3% of all Adblock Plus users. Which doesn’t sound like a lot but turns into tens of thousands users in absolute numbers.

Now this isn’t a new issue, new is only the fact that I managed to somewhat quantify it. We had users report that they cannot install Adblock Plus due to signature verification issues (StartCom root certificate not cleared for object signing) and also that they get errors caused by subscription downloads (StartCom root certificate not cleared to identify web hosts). While the former is somewhat understandable (StartCom only started signing objects relatively recently, many Linux distributions for example still don’t ship the updated NSS version), the latter isn’t. We are talking about a root certificate that has been included into the Mozilla code three years ago. I guess that it was included in some of the early Firefox 2 minor releases already.

So, why won’t it work for so many people? I had a chance to communicate with some of the people affected. The symptoms are apparently that the StartCom root certificate is present but its trust settings have non-default values. In one case I asked the user to remove secmod.db cert8.db from his profile (essentially resetting all built-in certificates to the default values) and it worked. I think that manual configuration change can be excluded as the cause: almost all the people I asked are not aware of ever going to the certificates UI. There was one exception where a guy disabled root certificates to satisfy his strange idea of security but that’s definitely not a common case. What else could it be?

Update: Sorry, I mistakenly mentioned secmod.db above — the real file storing trust options is cert8.db, that one was removed.

Licensing Service For Android Applications

Posted: 27 Jul 2010 10:00 AM PDT

[This post is by Eric Chu, Android Developer Ecosystem. — Tim Bray]

In my conversations with Android developers, I often hear that you’d like better protection against unauthorized use of your applications. So today, I’m pleased to announce the release of a licensing service for applications in Android Market.

This simple and free service provides a secure mechanism to manage access to all Android Market paid applications targeting Android 1.5 or higher. At run time, with the inclusion of a set of libraries provided by us, your application can query the Android Market licensing server to determine the license status of your users. It returns information on whether your users are authorized to use the app based on stored sales records.

This licensing service operating real time over the network provides more flexibility in choosing license-enforcement strategies, and a more secure approach in protecting your applications from unauthorized use, than copy protection.

The licensing service is available now; our plan is for it to replace the current Android Market copy-protection mechanism over the next few months. I encourage you to check out the Licensing Your Applications section of our Developer Guide and the Android Market Help Center to learn how you can take advantage of this new service immediately.

YouTube Increases Video Length Limit to 15 Minutes

Posted: 29 Jul 2010 10:41 AM PDT

YouTube decided to increase the video length limit from 10 minutes to 15 minutes. It may seem like a small change, but YouTube is testing the waters before dropping this limitation.

"Without question, the number one requested feature by our creators is to upload videos longer than 10 minutes. We've heard you, and today we're pleased to announce that we've increased the upload limit to 15 minutes," informs YouTube's blog.

The main reason why YouTube added a 10 minutes limitation back in 2006 was that a lot of users uploaded full-length movies and TV shows. Now that YouTube uses a content identification software and Viacom lost the case against YouTube, Google's video site can safely remove this arbitrary limitation. YouTube is cautious, so it will release incremental improvements.

"We've spent significant resources on creating and improving our state-of-the-art Content ID system and many other powerful tools for copyright owners. Now, all of the major U.S. movie studios, music labels and over 1,000 other global partners use Content ID to manage their content on YouTube. Because of the success of these ongoing technological efforts, we are able to increase the upload limit today," explains YouTube.

Atendimentos...

Posted: 28 Jul 2010 02:18 AM PDT

Zero.

Eu: "Viva!

"Não tenho troco", diz-me.

Dual Boot Windows Mobile e Android

Posted: 28 Jul 2010 01:31 AM PDT

Análise ao LG GW620

Posted: 28 Jul 2010 03:11 AM PDT

  • Teclado QWERTY completo
  • RAM 256MB
  • CPU Qualcomm MSM7200A a 528Mhz
  • Memória Interna 150 MB
  • 3G HSDPA 7.2 Mbps, HSUPA
  • WLAN Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g
  • Camera 5 MP, 2560 x 1920 pixels, autofocus, LED flash (Geo-tagging, reconhecimento de rostos, etc.)
  • Video QVGA@30fps
  • Android OS v1.5 (Cupcake)
  • Outros:
    - microSD (até 32GB)
    - microUSB
    - Bluetooth 2.0 c/A2DP
    - bússola digital- acelerómetro
    - A-GPS
    - Radio FM
  • Dimensões: 109 x 54.5 x 15.9 mm
  • Peso 139 g
  • Bateria: Li-Po 1500 mAh

A construção

Notícias do Dia

No Japão o Yahoo usa o Google

Google Places no Android

Google Music prestes a chegar?

E as guerras musicais parecem estar prestes a atingir novos níveis...
