May Monthly Meeting
Date: Thursday, May 2nd, 2024
Location: Evan’s house
Attendees: Evan, Brandon, Ryan, Steve, Justin, Loy, Nich, and Jake
Old Biz
April meeting was hosted by Brandon. We had our dark lager tasting which also included some German dark wheat ales as well.
We discussed a club-only competition to be held at the November 7th meeting. No restrictions on the beer, but you must choose a BJCP style for it to be judged against. As a follow up to the off-flavor tasting it gives members a chance to critically taste beers and score beers similar to BJCP judges in competitions. Prizes for both highest scored beer and popular vote.
New Biz
Montana Brewers Spring Rendezvous - May 11th at the fairgrounds
Iron Brewer Reminder - May 18th, hosted by Steve, potluck event
Ideas for next style tasting. Recent tastings have been Saisons, Stouts, and Dark Lagers
Light Lagers in July
Hosts for upcoming meetings?
Amy June 6
Bruce July 11th (second Thursday of month due to holiday)
Brandon August (tentative)
Nich suggested doing a club event in June (15th?) or July at Sawdust and Steel. Jake to brew cucumber sour. Club members could tour the facility and observe brewing at a larger scale. Could also have homebrew tasting at Nich’s house after.
Upcoming Events
Iron Brewer - May 18th - Hosted by Steve. Everyone draws an ingredient out of a hat and brews a beer featuring that ingredient. The winner is chosen by popular vote at the tasting. This event is a potluck as well, bring a dish that pairs with your beer.
Homegrown Homebrew Competition - Judging, June 8th - Submissions window May 15th to June 5th - The club’s annual homebrew competition with Katabatic Brewing. Best in Show prize is the opportunity to brew their beer at Katabatic Brewing! Additional prizes for runner-ups. Brew club members get two free entries. Most beer styles are welcome, but no sour or barrel aged beers.
Club campout and stein beer brew - June 28th-30th - We have the group site at Spire Rock Campground reserved. Same spot as last year. The club brews a batch of beer at the campsite and does all the heating with hot rocks from the campfire.
Nich can’t lead the brew. Need another person to be the lead.
Structured Homebrew Tasting
Anyone can volunteer their homebrew for a tasting. This is an organized critical tasting, similar to how judges would taste a beer at a competition to provide thorough feedback to the brewer. Can include the flavors/aromas that people perceive, how it fits within its style, any present flaws, and overall quality/enjoyment of the brew.
Adjourn to socialize and share homebrew
