The Meaning of Food

Friday 17th – Sunday 19th October

A Festival of Film – served with discussion, displays & good food!

The Pierian Centre is hosting a weekend Festival of Film on 17th–19th October.  The Meaning of Food is an extravaganza looking at food from every angle – from the comic austerity of A Private Function to the sensuous abundance of Chocolat.  Speakers, discussion and tasters complete this cultural banquet!

The importance of food runs through the very core of human culture.  Food lives in the mouth, in the mind, and in the farmer’s hand.  It lives in the memory of individuals and communities.  It can be a sacrament, or a commercial transaction – a key to ritual, relationship and politics.  And Hunger has been our companion since time began.  The Meaning of Food explores the myriad ways that film handles food.

In addition to a tasty menu of films, there's a set-piece Discussion at 2pm on Saturday 18th Oct.  'The Good, The Bad & The Unpalatable' is the title - and it's looking at the ethics behind the food we eat, with expert speakers from Friends of the Earth, Transition Bristol and the World Development Movement.

We’ll be serving food linked to each film – and a speaker as well to help you digest it!  A Programme is below, but for details contact us on 0117 924 4512 or in...@pieriancentre.com.  The Pierian Centre is at 27 Portland Square, St Pauls, Bristol BS2 8SA (www.pieriancentre.com).  It’s the tastiest Film Festival in town!
