Hi,

My rat Alice (1yr. 9mos. old) is responding to high end dosing of doxycycline (10mg/kg twice a day) and theophylline (bronchodilator, 10mg/kg twice a day). She sounded congested and was earlier started on 10mg/kg once a day doxycycline, the more usual dose, but we increased the dose when she got worse. She is comfortable with the current treatment.

This higher dose of doxycycline will be continued for two weeks. Then we resume the lower dose to see how she does and to minimize side effects.

Let us know how she does on the higher dose, that's good information. We will try it then

Hi Lindsay,

Today completes two weeks that Alice is on high dose doxycycline and she has done well on it. A previous vet used to treat my rats that had severe respiratory disease and had shown Mycoplasma pulmonis (myco) in serology with the higher dose of doxycycline with periodic return to the lower dose to see how the rat would do. This vet liked to work with doxycycline or minocycline, but my rats never got minocycline.

Another vet of mine preferred to rotate courses of different antibiotics.

Thank you,
Raquel

Good, thanks for that info! I like doxy activity against Myco too, it is actually more effective than Baytril, when either drug is given alone, but most effective is both together

Do you ever use theophylline? I got improvement after adding theophylline.

Thank you,
Raquel

I'm so grateful to you guys for sharing your med and dosing information. I pass this information on to my vet and he saves it for future use. Thank you!

Hi Cindy,

In that case, you may want to give your vet Lindsay's recommended article on Rat Guide, "Mycoplasma/Mycoplasmosis":
Thank you,

NO, I have not used it for no other reason than my vets don't use it. It is a bronchdilator? We tend to use albuterol in the nebulizer for that purpose.

Yes, theophylline is a bronchodilator.

Thank you,
Raquel
