You can add items to our altar or create your own on the Tijuana side.

Dress up as catrinas and catrines. No Halloween costumes, please! (Totally different holiday...)

Dia De Los Muertos is celebrated November 1st & 2nd (in alignment with All Saints Day & All Souls Day respectively). It is NOT celebrated on October 31st, it is not tied in with Halloween in the U.S. at all!

We welcome volunteers to help paint children's faces with the traditional calavera design. We encourage women to come in dressed as catrinas as well!

In Mexico, November 1st is dedicated as Dia De Los Inocentes, a day to honor and respect the innocents, children & infants to be more specific. November 2nd is Dia De Los Muertos, the day to honor deceased adults.

On these days, altars are made in honor of them. People build them on their loved ones graves, at home or anywhere they find rightful to honor their loved ones. They make ofrendas (offerings) to the dead of their favorite foods, toys (for children), pictures, pan de muertos, sugar skulls and many other things that help guide the spirits of the dead safely to the altars.

Marigolds, known as the flowers of the dead, are usually prominent in the altars.

Hola Mar Cardenas,

This is Lory from PA.  Many of the activities for Border Angels and its' affiliates are on the West Coast, a little too far for us Pennsylvanians to participate in !!  But, I just wanted to thank you for the great definitions and descriptions of the upcoming celebration of Dias De Los Muertos. Most people in our neck of the woods don't know much about this important cultural holiday, and the ones who  have heard of it usually have a very negative view of it. (?? "Why do they have a holiday that celebrates dying?? - that 's really dumb!!) - is usually a typical response. I expect that, & other comments that are not as polite as well,  from the American folks here, but it has been surprising to me that so many Hispanics from Mexico and other South American countries have such a poor understanding of this holiday as well. I'm not just talking about the kids coming up & growing up in a different environment here in the US but their parents and other extended family members who came as immigrants to this country as well. I'm going to use the info contained in your e-mail to ask questions and create talking points w/ some of my students and clients in the community; and anybody else I can get interested in the subject !!  For the first time that I know of in our area, there will be a mainstream  community event to Celebrate Dias De Los Muertos; there will be an art show and lecture/discussions at The Fryburger Gallery at the University of Penn State, Berks County Campus, which it located here in Reading, Berks County.  I'm planning to take some of my students if possible - I'll let you know how it goes !!  Thanks Again     Lory :-)
