I'm sure that Dorian suffered a lot during his childhood. He was alone and he was punished by his grandfather who kept him for several years at a distance, locked in a dark room. In my opinion, the rest of his life was influenced by his childhood. This is the only way that can explain his attitudes and feelings towards the world. He was a selfish person because he had suffered a lot and he had experienced lots of terrible moments of loneliness and neglect.
