Imagine the conversation between David and Emily.

Emily isn't sure of her feelings. She has said that she will marry Ham,
but she likes Steerforth. David tells her what to do if she wants to be
good.

It was afternoon, just after lunch. David was getting confused about
lost of things that Steerforth and Emily were saying, so he decided to
visit Emily, who he knew since they were both children. He was
determined to discover the reason of so much mystery. He didn't like
their way of talking and we wanted to help.

"Knock-Knock."
Emily opened the door. 'Hi, David. Come in. How are you?'
'I'm fine, thank you. And you, Emily?'
'The same... Sit down. Would you like something to drink?'
'Tea, please. Where are the others?'
'Mrs Gummidge is visiting her aunt and Ham went fishing. He must be
arriving. Here's your tea.'
'You must be very happy now that you are going to get marry,' said
David trying to find out more.
'Yes, I'm happy,' said Emily with no enthusiasm on her face.
David stared at Emily's eyes. They didn't look happy. 'You
don't seem very convincing... Is it something going wrong? Do you
need help?'
Emily looked at David sadly. She sat down and approached her chair to
David's chair. She hesitated. 'I think I need help,' she said
watching the floor.
'Let me help you, Emily. We have always been good friends.'
'It's quite complicated to explain,' she said with some
difficulty. 'I shouldn't be thinking or feeling like the way I'm
thinking and feeling now.'
'You're starting to scare me...'
'Oh, David! I'm so confused!' she cried. 'I've been behaved
badly lately. I accepted Ham's marriage proposal, but I don't know
if I did the right think.'
'Why? Is something impeding you of that?'
'Yes... Steerforth...' she said crying.
David head was now completely full of other thoughts...what Steerforth
said, what Emily said, how they behaved when they were together.
Everything made sense that moment.
'I need help, David. I've been meeting Steerforth secretly. We
don't do anything wrong... We just talk. But time disappears when
I'm with him. And I know he feels the same way. I don't want to
hurt Ham. I like him, but not how I like Steerforth. But I've now
accepted the marriage proposal and I know he wants to make me happy.
Despite of my feelings about Steerforth, I think life with him would be
unstable. Sometimes he gets problems and that's not good if people
want a happy marriage. Oh, David! I need your help so much! I need you
to say me what to do. I don't want to hurt Ham, but I don't know if
I want to be with Steerforth. I don't want to behave badly.' She
was crying a lot couldn't look at David's face.
'Oh, poor Emily!' said David hugging her. 'I'll do my best to
help you. I think you should talk sincerely with Ham, like you did with
me. You shouldn't meet Steerforth any more until you know what to do.
I can talk with him if you want and explain the situation. Let's see
what Ham thinks about all this. You shouldn't lie to him.'
'Thank you, David,' said Emily with a thankful look. 'What would
I do if you weren't here helping me?'
'I will always be here ready to help you...'
