Friends of Scouting
Here's the scoop:

Friends of Scouting helps YOUR unit in a number of ways.  First, it provides the council service center, where you can ask questions, and find a dedicated staff of people who are committed to your unit's success.  Second, it pays for roughly half of the summer camp fees for both Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts.  Just take a look at the price of many other camps, and you will find them in the $350 to $400 price range.  Third, all of the training materials, Roundtable packets, and other FREE items are paid for with Friends of Scouting dollars.  Finally, there are two ways that your unit can see the effects of Friends of Scouting directly.  The Friends of Scouting Award allows your unit the opportunity to receive a discount on summercamp.  The Quality Unit plus Award allows your unit to save bundles of money by receiving FREE cloth rank advancement.  It makes sense for every unit to push as hard as they can for Friends of Scouting, as you see the benefits both to you and your unit.

Our district is performing dismally in paying our FAIR SHARE of our council.  As the third largest district, we are only being asked to contribute $52,250 of the just over $2.2 Million budget.  That's only 2.3% of the entire council budget, yet we make up a third of the council's membership!  That means that we're making the other, smaller districts carry our weight.

Here is how we stand as of today:

Family Campaign (from Scouting Units) Goal: $33,500, Current: $24,015

Community Campaign (from Community Organizations and Businesses) Goal: $11,000 Current: $9,710

Leadership Campaign (from District Committee Members and Commissioners) Goal: $7,750, Current: $8,212

That leaves us with $10,313 to go.

What you can do to help:

1.  If you have yet to give, GIVE!  Remember, Scouting is a year round program, so you can spread your payments out over the course of the year.

2.  Talk to the families in your unit, and encourage them to give.

3.  Talk to friends and your family, and let them know how important Scouting is to you and your family.

District Recruiting Events

Lisa Harwerth, our District Membership Chair, has been working at putting together a number of recruiting events for the packs in the Des Moines area.  However, the participation of all of the packs, except Pack 40, has been nonexistent.  Therefore, any future recruiting events will follow the "those that show, are those that grow" philosophy.  This means that the packs that participate are those that will reap the benefits of new Scouts in their unit.

Spring Recruiting (Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts)

Should you need fliers for your school, please contact Kurt at khof...@bsamail.org or 515-266-2135 or 800-999-7268 to order fliers for distribution at your school.  We also have posters.  Please give us at least 4 days of lead time to get everything printed.

Boy Scout Summer camp

The following Troops have not registered for summercamp:

Troops: 119, 137

If your troop is going to another council's camp, please let Kurt know where and when you are going by e-mailing him at khof...@bsamail.org.  Also, if you are having trouble with the software for registering your Scouts for Camp Mitigwa, please contact Lane Stumme at lst...@bsamail.org.

Memorial Day Opportunity for Scouts and Buglers

Lisa Beck would like to get as many Scouts and Buglers together at 3:00 PM on Monday the 30th at the Vietnam Memorial on the State Capitol grounds for a moment of remembrance.  Buglers are being asked to play taps, and the media will be available.  For more information, contact Lisa Beck at quit...@yahoo.com.

Roundtable:  June 9, 7 PM First Baptist Church, Indianola

For the June Roundtable, we are having Commodore Clayton's Raingutter Regatta for Cub Scouters.  Please plan to have fun, no supplies necessary.  For Boy Scouters, we are having the Scoutmaster's cook-off.  All Scoutmasters and Assistants are invited to prepare a Dutch Oven dish for judging by the Commissioners of Cuisine and Guest Chef Dan Kern.  Please submit your recipes ahead of time to Kurt at khof...@bsamail.org, as we intend to share them to help everyone expand their culinary skills.  You may come early to light your charcoal at 6:30 PM, and all dishes need to be ready for judging at 8PM.  Everyone bring your own mess kit for taste testing.

Fall Camporee
Details and sign-ups are available, please see whoever from your unit attended the May 12 Roundtable for details.  We will include the details in each Roundtable packet through September.  If you need it e-mailed to you, please e-mail Kurt at khof...@bsamail.org.
