As most of you know, BlinkList has had some serious "up time" issue
over the past month and truth be told, a lot of our problems were
caused by our hosting company that has been far too sloppy for a
service as critical as this one.

When we requested to upgrade hardware, they don't seem to get the
basics right such as testing the additional RAM and so we end up with
bad memory that brings down the entire site for multiple days until we
finally can't find any more bugs and call the hosting company at which
point they say ops.

The list of things they have done wrong goes on...

Enough is enough and we are looking for a new reliable web hosting
company. BlinkList is growing so much that we need to go and work with
someone that can help us grow instead of limit our growth.

Since it is right before Christmas and the New Year, we will not move
until January but have started to the research to find a new home for
BlinkList.

Do any of you have experience with web hosting companies that you would
like to recommend?

For full disclosure, our current web host is www.liquidweb.com. They
have served us well with our ecommerce site but when it comes to
something as important as BlinkList that requires lots of upgrades,
great up time and response time, they have completely failed.

Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mike, Here's my input :)

Peer 1 - http://www.peer1.com
Guaranteed 100% uptime. Used by Squarespace.com
(see
http://service.squarespace.com/log/2006/12/13/tom-delay-squarespace-blog-traffic-managed.html)

Media-Temple
http://www.mediatemple.net/
Some teething problems with the roll-out of their (gs) Grid-Server
system but a very scaleable and well respected web hosting service.

Others include The New York Internet Company - http://www.nyi.net/
and Hosting Zoom - http://www.hostingzoom.com/

Best of luck!

I am very satisfied with 1&1:

I'm stunned! I thought I'd jump in quick before the rush from users
recommending their favourite web host. But it's stuck at just two
replies :(

While I'm here I might add that I actually use Media-Temple,
Squarespace (Peer1) and Dreamhost and, after extensive research and
trials, I decided that - for the money (from $16.66 a month) -
Media-Temple is the best webhosting company around.

Incidentally, if anyone is looking for 200GB of space (increasing by
an extra 1GB every week) and 2TB of bandwidth (increasing by 16GB every
week) with Dreamhost for just $22 for the first year you can use my
Maximum Discount Code. (I make nothing from it!) Sign up for the Crazy
Domain Insane yearly plan and quote My Promo Code: MRPS97 Merry
Christmas!

Thanks for the tips.  We have received some good tips here and via email and I have made lots of calls.  For right now will probably stick with LiquidWeb for a while longer.  It turns out that they are one of the better hosting companies and they do have very attractive price points.  Peer 1 looks solid but their pricing is very high, especially once you are at the level that we are at with BlinkList where you need many servers.
