Meet representatives from Tezuka's US publishers and gain insights into one of the fastest-growing segments in book publishing in America: manga. The panel will be moderated by Alvin Lu of VIZ Media, publisher of Tezuka's Phoenix, and will include speakers Anne Ishii from Vertical, publisher of Buddha, Carl Gustav Horn from Dark Horse, publisher of Astro Boy, and Ian Robertson of VIZ Media. Speakers will discuss the experience of bringing Japan's "God of Manga" to American shores and how Tezuka's influence continues to pervade the current manga boom in the US. Plus: special previews of new and forthcoming publications. This program offered in conjunction with Tezuka: The Marvel of Manga on view through September 9, 2007.

Exhibition Spotlight: Tezuka: The Marvel of Manga...

If you have ever wanted to learn more about "manga art," then definitely check out Tezuka: The Marvel of Manga, an exhibition devoted to Tezuka Osamu (1928-1989), an icon in the world of Japanese comics who created more than 700 manga titles and is probably best known to the western world for "Astro Boy" and "Kimba the White Lion." In this special, unique exhibition, see over 200 works by Tezuka, including original drawings, covers, and posters that trace his evolution as a pioneering artist.1 Tezuka is exclusive to the Asian Art Museum as the only U.S. venue and will show thru Sept. 9, 2007. Philip Brophy is curator.

Museum: 200 Larkin Street - between McAllister and Fulton Streets. Hours: Tuesday through Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Thursdays until 9 p.m. Closed Mondays and certain holidays. Admission: $12 for adults; $8 for seniors 65/older; $7 for college students with ID, youth ages 13-17; free for children under 12. There's no additional charge to view the Tezuka exhibition.
