Hi,

We're starting up a data network of over 25 biological university
collections in Canada. Instead of gathering the metadata about these
collections in an internal document, I would like to use and promote
BCI for this. Most of our collections are already in BCI, but more
data could be added (which I will ask the collection managers).
I also discovered that non of our botanical garden (=living)
collections are available in BCI: http://groups.google.ca/group/canadensys/web/collections
(see end of the page). Is this because this information was not
available in BCI's sources (Index Herbarium,...) or are there
guidelines to not include botanical gardens and other living
collections?
If I can add these collections, what are the best ways for doing so?
For example: I don't see any "living collection" or "botanical garden"
in the "kind of collection"-field in "create an entry"-form.

Peter

PS: The homepage (welcome message) of the BCI Google Group has been
vandalized (again).

Hi Peter,

Please go ahead and add living collections to BCI. Not including
living collections was a matter of prioritization as much as anything.
If some one wants to add living collections that is fine. The
situation is similar with geological collections (I know it is not
strictly all biodiversity...) which I have been asked about before.

Let me know if you need any other help with your project.

All the best,

Roger
p.s. Removed vandalism. Seems to be a general problem with Google
Groups as it has happened to many people. I have tightened down
authorization even more so everything is moderated but there must have
been a vulnerability in the welcome page widget thing. Makes me think
it may be better to use bespoke solutions than one of these big
community facilities in future. Please let me know if you see it
again.

FYI you moderated all posts to the list - was that intentional? I
assumed not, and so switched that back.

I suspect so too, like a Trojan Horse or something? Unfortunately, it
doesn't seem possible to see the editing history of the welcome
message. Or was it a deposited file?

Right now nobody can post files except the moderators. Not sure that's
a good thing.
